Painful period is one of the symptoms experienced by most young women, about 60-70% of young women go through painful period every month. Painful periods can occur during or just before you have your period, these cramps can occur in the lower belly, back or thigh and this is also known as (Dysmenorrhea). Although painful period is not considered a life-threatening disorder but it may reduce the quality of life and satisfaction, as it can interfere with daily activities. Painful period can range from mild to severe, you may experience diarrhea, nausea, constipation or dizziness. To get rid of these pains a lot of women tends to look for something they can eat or drink to ease the pain especially with the different emotions they experience during their period.

Causes of Painful periods
Period pains occurs when the cell that forms the lining of the uterus also known as endometrial cell, begin to break down during menstruation and release a large number of inflammatory prostaglandins. These chemicals constrict the blood vessel in the uterus and make the muscle layer contract causing painful cramps.

Other possible causes include:

Fibroid
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Endometriosis
Side effect of copper intrauterine device (IUD).

Foods to ease period pains
Fiber rich food: Normally fiber helps to maintain bowel movement and this can help you feel less bloated during your period and relieving you of stomach pains. Food rich in fiber are whole grain, vegetables and fruits like pineapple and dates.
Eat magnesium rich food: Magnesium has been discovered to relief symptoms of headache and menstrual cramps. Food that contains magnesium are dark chocolate, almond, dark leavy green and avocado.
Food that are rich in iron: Food rich I iron helps to increase blood count especially when you eat them weeks before your period. Food rich in iron are spinach, lentil, lean meat, broccoli are all good sources of iron.
Antioxidant food: Antioxidant are important because they help fight off free radicals and are also good during menstruation to ease period pains. Antioxidant rich food are raspberries, cherries, strawberries and blackberries.
Food rich in omega-3 fatty acid: Eating omega-3 fatty acid during your period helps to improve your diet and ease period pains. Foods with omega-e fatty acid are seafood, eggs, flaxseed, walnuts and chia seeds.
Eat food rich in vitamin E: vitamin E rich food helps to relieve menstrual pains and help blood flow. Foods rich in vitamin E are wheat, almond, peanut and roasted sun flower seed.

Natural drinks to help you ease period pains
Hot Chocolate: Cocoa are rich in diverse nutrients, they contain magnesium, iron, potassium and antioxidants. They help to regulate blood flow, hormonal imbalance and relief period pain. You can make hot chocolate with pure cocoa powder or melt dark unsweetened chocolate add honey to taste.
Water: Staying hydrated during your period is very import for blood flow, water help to prevent bloating. Drink a lot of water especially days before your period. Drink warm water during your period to help blood flow out.
Boiled ginger and lemon: Ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties that help relief period pains and even help with stomach upset. Lemon on the other hand help to relief stomach pain that comes with period. Boil fresh ginger and lemon and add honey to taste.
Turmeric milk: Turmeric contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to relief period pain. Take cup of powdered or grated turmeric, add it to a cup of warm water and add honey to taste.
Chamomile tea: Chamomile floral contains a compound called glycine and Hippurate, they have been linked to relief muscle spasm. This can help the uterine muscle to relax resulting to less period pain and tension. Chamomile tea can also reduce any pain. Take a cup of warm chamomile tea to relief period pains.

Bottomline:
A lot of women experience period pains every month and this can come with discomfort that can affect their daily activities during menstruation. A change in diet and taking natural drink might help relieve this pain.
