About 13% of the world's adult population (11% of men and 15% of women) was obese in 2016. We see many people (especially women) that go on a weight loss journey all over the internet, and while some put in the effort to lose a substantial amount of fat, others give up. But did we ever stop to think of the other group of people that are underweight or too skinny and want to gain weight instead? Maybe you did, maybe you didn't.

Being underweight is as much a problem as being overweight, and whether you're clinically underweight or simply struggling to gain muscle weight, the main principles are the same.

BEING UNDERWEIGHT WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Being underweight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) below 18.5 which is estimated to be less than the body mass needed to sustain optimal health. Though being underweight is more common among girls and women than men, it is associated with a 140% greater risk of early death in men and 100% in women; hence, being underweight may be worse for men.

Several conditions can cause unhealthy weight loss, so you should see a doctor to ensure you don't have any severe health problems if you're underweight.

THE HEALTHY WAY TO GAIN WEIGHT

It's one thing to gain weight, and it's another thing to gain weight healthily. While binging on soda and doughnuts may help you gain weight, it could also destroy your health at the same time, so it's important to eat mostly healthy foods when you're trying to gain weight. I have compiled some tips that should work if done correctly and strictly.

1) Exercise: Exercise, especially strength training, can help build muscle mass and stimulate your appetite, making you want to eat more.

2) Stay Hydrated: Drink a lot of water. Trust me; water can never go wrong. Its benefits stretch beyond just adding weight healthily.

3) Consume less more often rather than more less often: This simply means eat frequently. Rather than stuffing yourself a few times a day,eat small portions many times a day.

4) Eat at least 3 times daily: You want to eat AT LEAST 3 times a day, nothing less.

5) Snack in between: Snack on nuts, peanut butter, dried fruits and avocados. Occasionally, a treat is OK, but remember we're trying to keep it healthy and not get unwanted belly fat. Yoghurt and granola bars are good choices.
