Erling Haaland scored his 45th goal of the season as Manchester City claimed an emphatic 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The prolific Norwegian added to a stunning first-half strike from Rodri and a Bernardo Silva header as City took firm command of their last-eight tie in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium. Haaland’s 76th-minute goal, six minutes after Silva’s, set a new record for the most scored in a single season by a Premier League player in all competitions.

City’s victory over the six-time European champions - and manager Pep Guardiola’s former club - sent out a strong statement as they look to win the coveted continental prize for the first time.

Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel, who plotted Chelsea’s 2021 final win over City, this time had no answer as City gradually ground out control and then finished with a flourish.

On his side’s performance: “For 55-60 minutes it was a tight game. In a lot of moments, they were better than us. But after 65 minutes, we found the second goal - that helped us a lot - we made some changes in our pressing and that was more effective.” Happy with the result.”

On Rodri’s goal: “What a goal. At that moment they were better, we could not press properly, it was difficult and so the goal helped.

“We were aggressive, the second goal was for that. We did it, how they defended the back four today was amazing. Looking at their bench, there was always a threat, it’s really good but there is the second leg to play.”

On the performance: “It is a great result for us, but not just the result but the fact that the team played so well, the effort we all made. It’s the end of the season and it’s quite remarkable the intensity and desire we have to go into every battle.

“For me, the key today was the defensive side. I think we were great and we understood perfectly how we could punish them.”

On his goal: “It was very special for me with a good goal and my first goal in the Champions League to help the team in a moment where I think we were struggling because they show us the weapons - they are a great great team. I think that gave us a lot of confidence to give going.”

On the second leg: “We don’t think it’s done because we know where we’re going, we know the team they are. It’s a good result and we are happy because of the performance, but we can’t think much on that.

“We face Leicester in the Premier League and then we face them in their home leg - we’re going to expect another final.”

WOW. The full-time whistle goes and it’s a perfect night for Manchester City in this first leg. It was an enthralling encounter but goals from Rodri, Silva and Haaland now see Guardiola’s side in a commanding position heading into the second leg.

Tuchel and Guardiola have had many a duel in the dugout over the years but the Spaniard has well and truly got the better of his German counterpart tonight. There’s another 90 minutes to go but City fans may well be already dreaming of a semi-final tie.
