Why we axed Enyeama–Shorunmu

Super Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, Ike Shorunmu, has explained the exclusion of beleaguered first choice goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, from the latest list of players to face Syli Stars of Guinea in the crucial Nations Cup qualifier scheduled for Abuja National Stadium on October 8 and Black Stars of Ghana in a friendly on October 11 in London.

Enyeama, who joined French Ligue 1 side Lille in August, was left out of Eagles’ games against Madagascar and Argentina earlier this month on disciplinary grounds and could face lengthy time on the sidelines after Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) deferred on addressing the matter last week.

Shorunmu said yesterday that Enyeama would remain excluded until he showed remorse for allegedly causing disaffection in the national team’s camp prior to the Eagles’ departure to Madagascar on August 31. “It’s not an abnormal trend,” Shorunmu justified the technical crew’s action on Enyeama.

“We emphasise that no player can hold the entire team to ransom and the sanctity of the rules must be maintained. “Vincent will still be considered for future assignments but he must be held accountable for his latest misdemeanour.” Interestingly, Shorunmu, who was former Eagles’ first choice, handed over to Enyeama in 2002 after he predicted that his successor would excel between the sticks. Enyeama would appear in four consecutive Nations Cup finals after, winning bronze in 2004, 2006 and 2010.
