Former Super Eagles midfielder Emmanuel Ebiede has died aged 45 after a long illness.

Ebiede died on Friday April 14 after battling hepatomegaly (enlarged liver).

The sad news was confirmed by journalist China Acheru, who lives in Port Harcourt, where Ebiede was treated.


“Goodbye Emmanuel Ebiede. Your journey on earth is over,” Acheru posted on his Twitter account.

A former presidential candidate in the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) elections in 2022, David Doherty, also confirmed the news. “Unfortunately Emmanuel Ebiede has passed away,” tweeted Doherty, who opened a fundraiser for Ebiede on his social media accounts.

Ebiede played professionally in Belgium (Eendracht Aalst) and the Netherlands (SC Heerenveen) and was capped three times by Nigeria in the senior team.
