Nigeria’s unity not negotiable – Mark

BY HENRY UMORU, ABUJA
SENATE President David Mark said yesterday that the unity or indivisibility of Nigeria was not negotiable, just as he pleaded with Nigerians not to despair because benefits of a united nation far outweigh the reversed order.

Speaking when he led members of the 3rd regular course of the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) alumni association 1967 set on a courtesy visit to the Oba of Benin , Erediauwa 11, the Senate President said that irrespective of the security and other challenges confronting the nation, Nigeria as a country must strive towards ensuring that the unity of the country remains our watchword.

In a statement signed yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark who urged both the government and the led to brace up to the challenge of nationhood, stressed that Nigerians have accepted democracy as a way of life, adding, ‘’we must do our best to perfect the process so that we can all reap the dividend of democracy.

‘’The unity and progress of Nigeria through a democratic process is the desire of all citizens. We must therefore provide a suitable environment for democracy to thrive”

He reiterated the resolve of the 7th National Assembly to commence immediately the process of amending the 1999 constitution to correct the imbalances assuring that traditional rulers would be given a place of pride in the proposed arrangement.

His colleagues who have served in various military formations he said have continued to contribute their quota to unity and development of the nation.

Responding, the Oba of Benin, Oba Erediauwa who thanked the delegation for their continued contribution to nation building, however urged them not to relent in their various endeavour.

According to Mumeh, the Senate President who also paid a courtesy call on Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, implored government at all levels to make the welfare and security of the citizenry their watchwords.

He told the governor to uphold the tempo of development in the state so that the citizenry continues to reap their investment on democratic government.

In his remarks, governor Oshiomhole said he has recorded modest achievements that have earned him the respect from the people, promising not to rest on his oars in that stead.

OAM4J:

just as he pleaded with Nigerians not to despair because benefits of a united nation far outweigh the reversed order.

What is the argument for this? If anything, Nigeria at the moment is less than the sum of its parts, no?

Country of 160 million+ people punching far below its weight.

When the going starts going, he wont even be there to face the pepper soup. We better renegotiate our unity or face the very bleek results of forced unity. Nobody is saying we cant remain the same nation, but we have to renegotiate everything from structure and strength of the government. As far as I am concerned, the center(fg) has to be made weaker.

What does anyone expect Mark to say of the nation that has so immensely benefitted him and his tribe in banditry, while frustrating the rest of the tens of millions that strive daily to find meaning in this hopeless colonial left-over called Nigeria
Re: Nigeria Will Not Divide - David Mark by ridgeman: 9:21am On Sep 24, 2011
Don't mind David Mark, only he knows why his topic of discussion was Unity of Nigeria,

Just watch he is positioning himself and don't be surprised if he continues harping on about Unity
its all an effort to be relevant when the middle belt get tired of being used as a buffer and finally decide
their own destiny,

Which is more interesting Senate Leader or President of a new Nation,

David Mark will not be talking of Unity then,

Re: Nigeria Will Not Divide - David Mark by babakb: 12:21pm On Sep 24, 2011
the 1914 amalgamation of the nothern and southern protectorate created what is called the deceitful naija although the colonial masters partly solved the problem when independence was given under a regional government but the military guys destroyed everything, to make things worst prevented biafara to be another mistake and now ordinary naija's are suffering from the deeds of the military guys, naija as one nation can never benefit the masses but only a very few ( less than 5% of the total population ), the earlier we take the division of the country serious the better for us. divided we stand united we fall.
Re: Nigeria Will Not Divide - David Mark by kulutempa: 12:50pm On Sep 24, 2011
Isn't this strange? The elite don't want Nigeria to break up but the masses want to at least discuss that possibility by means of a sovereign national conference. It is obvious to me that what is good for the elite in Nigeria cannot possibly be good for the masses and vice versa. We must renegotiate this artificial country called Nigeria which was only created by the British for their convenience and not ours. How can a group of people continue to live in a house without a foundation, just because the previous owner left it like that?

I've always said that this man is a self serving thief. cool
Of course he is putting himself forward as a presidential candidate and he is sending coded messages to his fellow Northerners who are scared to death about Nigeria's inevitable disintegration.
By so doing, they would support him in 2015 for presidency. BUT, David Mark will be the President of Northern Nigeria only by then. cool
