Curriculum In Nigerian Schools Outdated, Overloaded, Lacks Present-Day Development – UNESCO

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has called for a review of Nigeria’s educational curriculum to meet present-day realities, saying the present curriculum is outdated and overloaded.

The UNESCO director of the International Bureau of Education (IBE), Ydo Yao, made the call at a capacity development training workshop for officials of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr Yao said to address the education crisis, there was a need for action in making curriculum relevant to ensure quality in education and that values, knowledge and skills thrived.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he said the curriculum was a central and irreplaceable component of any educational policy, which is also pivotal in transforming education.

“You know, we used to say that curriculum is for education, while a constitution is for a democracy. It means the curriculum is the heart of education. So, when you talk about education, you are talking about content, programmes and learning,” Mr Yao explained.

“So, if you want to transform education, and you don’t transform what is at the core of it, which is the learning, content and the programmes, your transformation has no meaning.”

Mr Yao described the curriculum as overloaded, outdated and short of present-day development, hence the need for review. He said the training was put in place to strengthen the capacities of specialists and officials in the ministry on eight thematic modules.

Meanwhile, the minister of state for education, Goodluck Opiah, says steps have been taken to rejig the curriculum.

Mr Opiah said, ”We recognise the fundamental role of curriculum in the drive for the attainment of globally agreed goals and country-specific aspirations. It remains the singular instrument capable of transforming the human capital base of a nation for effective contribution to nation-building and development.”

The minister added, “Thus, in setting our education targets as articulated in the Ministerial Strategic Plan (MSP) (2019 to 2022) for the education sector, curriculum and policy matters were identified and prioritised.”

Gbam, Gbammer Gbammest
We've been saying this, them think say we be hater.

Nigerian Education standard no follow at all. It's obsolete and not even encouraging.

Primary schools nowadays are thrash places where praise and worship and Quranic recitations has taken over national anthem and other hygiene checks and practices.

Higher institutions where lecturers no fit control projectors amd will be too proud too learn. Curriculum is rubbish promax.

Agric graduates dnt knw differences between broilers and noilers or ewedu leaves n mango leaves.
Geography graduates no sabi clay n sandy soil.
Naija students still following their forefathers in discriminating between unis, polys and colleges of education.

Unis dey do college of education courses now. Rendering all structures useless

La. Cram, la pour. Graduate, collect certificate with zero thinking skills.THE STREETS TEACHES MORE THAN SCHOOL NOWADAYS.

P. S
This and Nigerian constitution should be amended every 10 years to ACCOMMODATE FRESH BRAINS

Thank God someone is finally waking up to this reality. Nigerian school system is the most useless in the world aside Engineering, Medicine and other Medical related courses all other ones are useless I repeat they're useless.

Imagine a third class graduate in Nigeria bagging first class in the UK.

The system has failed so many people Nigerians are naturally gifted with a little push we can achieve great things.

2 days ago, 40 human beings were killed in the Zoo called country, nobody is talking about it, it didn't make front page on nairaland here, most MSM didn't carry the news,

40 Hausa people killed by Fulani militias, that's normal and no call for alarm.

But if criminals kill 2 people in South East then it will make front page with hundreds of comments.

True. In fact Nigerian schools are on auto pilot, no pilot, only passengers who decide to turn at will and where pockets are.

The education minister is a portfolio of Non existing arm in direct policy implementation. Zero vision and direction. I remember when I got admission in LASU, Anthony campus, Lagos, my first day in school was my last day. What a waste of destinies.

The first thing we must change is to introduce real Nigerian history into our curriculum and make it the language that kids speak. We need to churn out Nigerian graduates that are politically conscious like there was a war going on.

It's been a while I've met a group of youths dissecting political information where you even learn new things from them. All of them na Tiktok and Nyash.

Let our kids/youths understand that whatever engineering or doctorate degree you get will be useless if the political environment is against you. All our true political talents are docile because they didn't let the history of Nkurumah or Che Guevara inspire them as kids. Instead na McPherson constitution them put for their heads.

5. How to Save Money
6. How to Plan for your Future

These are the type of things school should teach young asparisnts that will make them transform society once the reach university

At the tertiary level, I have always thought that current or recent published articles should be used in creating course contents. I hope whatever shift, incorporates the obsolescence that AI is revolutionizing.

Very true. The teachers and school curriculum need constant trainings and reviews.

Mr Yao described the curriculum as overloaded, outdated and short of present-day development, hence the need for review.

It’s when you are doing MSc in a Public Nigerian University you’ll know that our educational system can’t solve the socioeconomic problems bedeviling the country.

Statistics is still being taught manually instead of using a software package to pass on the knowledge.

So sad!!!!

For those condemning Nigeria, school curriculum irrelevance is not only a Nigerian problem. It is a global issue.
Robert Kiyosaki has been singing this for decades in his books, yet no one cares to listen. People are still wasting their money and time studying irrelevance courses in schools. The truth is: 'EDUCATION' is one of the two biggest SCAMS facing our world today. The other one is... RELIGION.

As much as this might be true, we need to be circumspect. We don't want our kids to be taught how to identify as what they are not or become a letter in the world

Re: Curriculum In Schools Outdated, Overloaded, Lacks PresentDay Development: UNESCO by savcy(m): 11:02am On May 03, 2023
For years several stakeholders have been harping about our outdated schools curriculum, and nothing has been done about it. It won't take much effort than to setup a committee of education stakeholders and intelligentia to come up with one that reflects modern needs. But, you see Nigeria? They can't do it, and probably never will, because, the quality of education or its lack thereof doesn't affect the barrels of oil we sell daily, and whose proceeds we share amongst ourselves for looting purposes. Unlike advanced economies, the quality of education doesn't directly affect the survivability of the country. If we need anything we simply import it. Nigeria goes on with or without quality education, and that's why its taking government over five decades to update a simple curriculum that's outlived its use.
Re: Curriculum In Schools Outdated, Overloaded, Lacks PresentDay Development: UNESCO by Brenn594(m): 11:04am On May 03, 2023
Simple truth is Nigeria is lacking behind in most sectors, the Nigerian curriculum is outdated and rigid, we need to imbibe the idea of update from time to time.
Education system in this country is a mess, to get a standard education is very expensive because most public institutions are out of standard. reason why most political figures sent their offsprings abroad to school because they know.
