The following factors can raise a woman’s risk for fibroids:
1. Heredity: A woman with a mother or sister who had/has fibroids is more likely to develop fibroids herself at a time.

2. Age: Fibroids do appear when a woman is in her 30’s & 40’s.

3. Race: African-American women are 2-3 times more likely to develop fibroids than women of other races. Black women have fibroids at their younger ages, and larger fibroids.

4. Diet: Eating a lot of poor quality beefs and any type of pork are linked to a higher fibroids risk.

5. Obesity: Overweight or our obese women are more likely to develop fibroids compared to other women.

6. High Blood Pressure: High blood pressure or hypertension seems to increase a woman’s risk of developing fibroids.

7. Hypothyroidism: Over hypothyroidism has been linked with the presence of uterine leiomyoma (fibroids).

8. Early Menstruation: Women who being menstruation prior to the age of 10 are at a higher risk for fibroids than women who started menstruating after the age of 10.

9. Birth Control Pills: Taking birth control pills can make fibroids grow more quickly because of the increased estrogens level in your body.
10. Foods high in estrogens may also play a role in the development of fibroids in some women.
