Woman kidnaps friend's one-week old baby

A 38-year-old petty trader, Blessing Emmanuel, is currently at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for kidnapping a one-week old baby boy.

Emmanuel was said to have abducted the baby from his mother, Felicia Sunday, while she was asleep at her home in Delta State. The two women were friends.

A source said, "Emmanuel has been twice divorced and married for 15 years without a child. It was her inability to conceive that led to the breakup of her two previous marriages. When she learnt that Sunday had been delivered of a baby, it was an opportunity for her to get the child she never had."

Setting her plans in motion, Emmanuel left her N0 28 Church Street, Ajangbadi, Lagos residence and travelled to Sunday's home in Delta State under the pretext of helping her friend. One day, while Sunday was asleep, she quickly abducted the baby and fled back to Lagos. To the surprise of Emmanuel's neighbours, the cries of a baby could now be heard frequently from the direction of Emmanuel's apartment. It was an incident she bluntly refused to discuss with anyone.

Her neighbours told CRIME DIGEST that the bubble burst when Emmanuel's friends refused to accept her explanations. A source said, "We learnt that it was her friends - Comfort and Esther - who contacted the police when Emmanuel couldn't give a satisfactory explanation about how she came about the baby, who was constantly crying." Emmanuel was subsequently arrested on August 14, 2011. After an initial statement that the baby had been bought for N150,000, she eventually confessed to abducting the baby from its mother.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Samuel Jinadu, when contacted, confirmed the incident. He said, "The mother of the child has been contacted as to the whereabouts of her missing child. The law will take its course at the conclusion of our investigation."
