I’ve had the pleasure of trying out the new Huawei Mate X3, and let me tell you, it’s an impressive piece of technology.

Body Design:

Firstly, the design of the phone is sleek and modern. The body is thin, measuring 156.9×141.5×5.3mm, and weights only 239g. The phone comes in two different finishes, either with a glass front and back or an eco leather back, both of which look and feel premium. I particularly like the aluminum frame which adds to the durability of the device, and it’s even IPX8 rated, meaning it’s water-resistant and can withstand being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes, this means you can take those fancy underwater pictures when swimming.

Display:

The most notable feature of the Huawei Mate X3 is the foldable OLED display, which measures 7.85 inches and boasts 1B colors, a 120Hz refresh rate, 2224x2496px resolution, and a 10.1:9 aspect ratio with 426ppi. The display is stunning, with vibrant colors and sharp details, and it folds seamlessly to transform the phone into a compact size. Additionally, there’s a cover display, which is also OLED, 6.4 inches, with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1080 x 2504 pixels resolution.

Chipset:

The Huawei Mate X3 is powered by the Qualcomm SM8475 Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 4G (4 nm) chipset, which is an octa-core processor, with 1×3.19 GHz Cortex-X2 & 3×2.75 GHz Cortex-A710 & 4×2.0 GHz Cortex-A510, and an Adreno 730 GPU. It’s available in three different storage options: 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB, all with 12GB of RAM. The phone uses UFS storage and NM (Nano Memory) for expandable storage of up to 256GB.

The phone runs on HarmonyOS 3.1 in China and EMUI in Europe, and it doesn’t come with Google Play Services. However, the software is smooth and intuitive, and it comes with a plethora of pre-installed apps that work seamlessly with the foldable display.

Camera:

The camera system on the Huawei Mate X3 is impressive, with a rear triple camera setup that includes a 50 MP wide-angle lens with f/1.8 aperture, a 12 MP telephoto lens with f/3.4 aperture, 5x optical zoom, and OIS, and a 13 MP ultra-wide lens with f/2.2 aperture. The front camera features an 8 MP wide-angle lens, both on the main screen and cover display, both with an f/2.4 aperture. The rear camera can capture 4K@30/60fps, 1080p@30/60fps videos, and it has gyro-EIS stabilization. The front camera can capture 4K@30fps and 1080p@30fps videos.

Software:

Moving on to the software, the Mate X3 runs on HarmonyOS 3.1 in China and EMUI in Europe. Unfortunately, due to ongoing issues with the US government, it does not come with Google Play Services. However, the phone does come preloaded with Huawei’s AppGallery, which has a growing collection of popular apps and games.

Battery Life:

The battery life on the Huawei Mate X3 is impressive, with a 4800mAh capacity that can be charged quickly with the 66W wired charger, 50W wireless charger, or 7.5W reverse wireless charging. The phone also has various connectivity options, including LTE, Hybrid Dual SIM, Wi-Fi 6, BT 5.2, NFC, and an infrared port. Additionally, the phone has a side-mounted fingerprint reader, stereo speakers, and BDS Satellite Message.

Connectivity:

In terms of connectivity, the Mate X3 supports LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and an infrared port. It also has a hybrid dual SIM slot that can be used for either a second SIM or a Nano Memory card, up to 256GB.

In Summary:

Overall, the Huawei Mate X3 is an impressive phone that delivers on both style and substance. Its foldable OLED display is stunning and the phone’s powerful hardware and long-lasting battery make it a great choice for anyone in need of a high-end smartphone. The lack of Google Play Services may be a downside for some users, but the phone’s preloaded AppGallery and HarmonyOS/EMUI software are still impressive in their own right. If you’re in the market for a cutting-edge smartphone, the Huawei Mate X3 is definitely worth considering.
