Are you planning to attend surgery? It can seem to be a frightening journey to take, right? The United States and Europe each account for around 40 to 50 million and 20 million of the world's 310 million annual major surgical procedures, respectively. So you are not alone in this surgery process.

However, proper preparation helps you overcome any fear and potential side effects. We will discuss seven ways to help you prepare for any surgery.

Step 1 - Get all necessary items

What do you need during your hospital stay over the surgery period? You should prepare a list of everything you could require and begin packing a few days in advance. Some items you can consider in your list include day clothes, underwear, night clothes, a dressing gown and slippers, a small hand towel and toiletries, books or magazines, sanitary products, a small amount of cash, etc.

Step 2 - Ensure you are at your best

Before your scheduled operation, you should ensure that your health is in as good of shape as possible. In other words, if you don't exercise regularly, you should think about trying out yoga or stretching. Both of these routines strengthen your abdominal muscles and arms, and legs, making it easier for you to move about after you are in recovery or back at home. After the procedure, it will be easier to deal with the aftermath if you have had adequate rest and maintained a healthy diet.

Step 3 - Get familiar with the surgery

Do you know the type of surgery you are going for? Are you aware of the time required to get the surgery done? How about the expected results? Is there any possibility of adverse effects during the surgery? When preparing for the surgery, you cannot avoid these key details of your procedure. Therefore, ensure you engage with professional sources to gain more knowledge about your surgery.

Step 4 - Speak out your feeling

Discovering the ins and outs of the operation itself goes hand in hand with discussing your concerns with your primary care physician or other members of your medical team. Remember that your concerns are valid, even though you may find them ridiculous.
Suppose you've never been in a pre-operation theater or postoperative recovery room. In that case, it's crucial to know what to anticipate, even if you're familiar with everything about the surgery. Request that the specialist taking care of your health walks you through each stage, so there are no shocks.

Step 5 - Understand your diet

Ask your doctor whether there are any adjustments to your diet that you need to make in the days leading up to your operation after you have planned it. Some surgical procedures require the patient to abstain from food and drink, while others don't require special preparations.

Step 6 - Medication

If the surgeon or the doctor at the hospital has requested you to take any medications before the procedure, you must comply. If you have diabetes and take insulin or tablets to treat it, you must communicate this with your doctor as soon as you can before your surgery.

Step 7 - Getting your home ready

Think about the condition you'll be in when you get back to your house before you walk out the door. You may want assistance from a social worker to prepare meals or get around. Will you require any specialized tools or appliances for your house?

And there you have it. Are you preparing for your surgery? You should ensure your medication, diet, home, fitness, and familiarity with the procedure are well addressed.
