The Federal Government is embarking on measures to check the existence of private militias and breach of peace in the country.

President Goodluck Jonathan stated this in Abuja on Monday while receiving the final report of the Presidential Committee on Security Challenges in the North East Zone.

President Jonathan, who was represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, said that government had budgeted huge amount of money to address the problem of poverty and the existence of more than 9.5 million ‘Almajiris’ in the northern part of the country.

According to him, ₦4 billion has already been approved for the implementation of the second phase of the Special Boarding Primary Schools for the ‘Almajiris’.

“Some of the major issues you have stated regarding the issue of poverty, issue of unemployment, issues to do with breach of peace, existence of prevent militia. These are issues that this administration is looking at very seriously.

“You would recall that in the 2011 budget, a large sum of money has been provided to support the development of creation of jobs in this country.” President Jonathan assured that government would do all it could to ensure that lives and property of Nigerians were properly secured.

According to him, government will look at the report and act as a matter of urgency in implementing it.

“It is not going to be business as usual. This administration will act on all similar reports to ensure that justice is done,” he added.

I really pray that successful and lasting programmes can be put in place to rehabilitate and educate the almajiri's. Theirs is a tale of child abuse and dehumanisation on an industrial scale. The disgraceful almajiri system in Nigeria really needs to come to an end; it is these dehumanised kids that swell the ranks of terrorist cults like boko haram.
