Treadway: This your question is the real crux of the matter. The problem isn't subsidy. Nigeria isn't the first country to subsidize consumption for it's citizens. Even the great US subsidizes consumption for Americans. Ask the maize farmers. But here in Naija, the problem is that the importers of petrol (who are mostly businessmen friendly with the government) have decided that they will inflate the reported consumption for their benefit. If the government focused on attacking that demographic to eliminate that corruption, our subsidy bill would be almost negligible or at the least very tolerable. But no, they want to slaughter Nigerians to the benefit of their business cronies. 1 Like |

airsaylongcome: US pays for its subsidies from tax revenue Nigeria has a poor tax to gdp ratio and at least 70% of Nigerians who are eligible don't pay taxes. And yes, we have to fight corruption I was right. You are only interested in calling me oppressor. |
Re: Subsidy Removal: N30,000 Minimum Wage No Longer Realistic – Workers by Lifestone(m): 2:25pm On Jun 02, 2023 |
airsaylongcome:Bro, the inability of GEJ to successfully remove the subsidy is a sign of gross weakness as a leader and you can see similar traits of weakness allover his government. So don't blame anyone, BAT was in opposition, he did his job, but GEJ was too timid for the Leadership of a complex country like Nigeria On Infrastructures, even Buhari's enemies will agreed that he tried on infrastructures given that nothing was left after setting subsidy, yeah there are massive corruption that needs to be dealt with. I was happy he delivered on the 2nd Niger bridge among others, he began fixing the rail also. If BAT had gone the way of GEJ with around the country consultation, the subsidy cabal would have frustrated him, he outwitted them by coming out earlier than they expected thereby giving them no space. |

Lifestone: I always chuckle when people say GEJ was weak on subsidy removal. Buhari who is an iron bender and never believed that there was subsidy became president and re-christened it as "under recovery" was he also weak too? Or subsidy wasn't a "problem" in his regime? 1 Like |

Lifestone:Not necessarily dual exchange rate is responsible for all that. And also massive haemorrhage revenue from the economy through bunkering, stealing of crude, underreporting production to steal crude, diversion of subsidized products only to end up being sold in other countries |
Re: Subsidy Removal: N30,000 Minimum Wage No Longer Realistic – Workers by Lifestone(m): 2:48pm On Jun 02, 2023 |
airsaylongcome:I also do not have respect for Buhari. How many difficult decisions did Buhari made? He began consultation after and he was also frustrated. If BAT followed that approach, he would have ended like them. |

airsaylongcome:Is Saudi in the same Economic situation like Nigeria? And sure they will altimately remove subsidy. I'm sure you are aware that Angola have removed subsidy too. No more subsidy in Ghana. It's not sustainable |
Re: Subsidy Removal: N30,000 Minimum Wage No Longer Realistic – Workers by airsaylongcome: 3:18pm On Jun 02, 2023 |
Lifestone: Completely right that about Saudi. They are subsidizing a luxury while we can't subsidize a necessity. As for Ghana and Angola, removal of subsidy did not have any impact on improving the life of the citizens. Same way that removal of subsidy on Diesel had no impact here. Good exchanging intellectual points with you. Work starts for me in 20 mins so I'm off. Have a great day 1 Like 1 Share |

While complaining about fuel subsidy removal, Think about how to harness the power of the sun to generate power and eliminate the need for generators. Imagine you spend 10 liters a day, you would be spending approx. 1.8 million in a year. Meanwhile, with 300,000 naira, you can get 1kva solar system to power your appliances, with 1.8 million, you can get 5kva solar system that can power your fridge, pumping machine, AC and appliances and with 900,000, you can get 2.5kva solar system. Rush now and get this from Gpgate Solar. All our products (inverters, battery etc) are manufactured by us and minimum of one year warranty on them all and guaranteed after sales services. Islie:The government should find a way to relieve the suffering of the people. You don't just wake up in the morning and implement a policy. We are not under a military regime. There should be a palliative to cushion the debilitating effect of subsidy removal. The rippling effect is increase in PMS pump price consequently leads to increase in transport, surge in price of goods and services, poor purchasing power among others |

Re: Subsidy Removal: N30,000 Minimum Wage No Longer Realistic – Workers by samwillyco1(m): 6:34pm On Jun 02, 2023 |
Lifestone: Subsidy removal is good but the timing and it's policy is bad. Firstly, why can't the government mandate the oil companies in Nigeria to build a working modular refinery before removing the subsidy. Secondly, this set of politicians will fund their life style from the money saved from subsidy instead of investing it in infrastructural/industrial sectors of the economy, wait and see how they will play the citizens of this country. |
Re: Subsidy Removal: N30,000 Minimum Wage No Longer Realistic – Workers by Lifestone(m): 6:49pm On Jun 02, 2023 |
samwillyco1:At the current price, the local modular refinery will fail as they can't cover their operational costs and make economic profit at the current price without paying them subsidy. For instance, Dangote will still sell at international price which will fluctuate with the exchange rate. Refining locally also won't stop smuggling to neighboring countries. Your second point is my main concern and I do hope that with this pain, Nigerian's disposition to corrupt leaders will be more decisive. |
