NLC Divided as North, South-west Chapters May Shun Planned Strike

*APC accuses union of working for Labour Party

*Atiku knocks Tinubu, says PDP would have provided palliatives first

The planned industrial action scheduled for Wednesday by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has experienced a setback as the union appears divided with the South-west and northern states’ chapters pulling out of the proposed action, THISDAY has learnt.

This is as one of the spokespersons of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bayo Onanuga, has accused the President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, of working for the Labour Party (LP) and attempting to destabilise the newly inaugurated government with the planned strike.

THISDAY gathered last night that following the alleged politicisation of the planned action that was scheduled in protest against the removal of petrol subsidy, the South-west and northern states’ chapters have resolved to back out of the plan.

However, to make the strike effective, NLC has written all its 43 affiliate unions to mobilise for the scheduled industrial action.

However, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has weighed in on the controversy over the removal of subsidy by President Bola Tinubu, saying his party had initiated the removal but would have provided palliatives.

Atiku, who referred to Tinubu’s administration as a “temporary government,” expressed confidence that he would reclaim his “stolen mandate” at the court.

The planned strike by the NLC is in reaction to the removal of the petrol subsidy, which led to a hike in the pump price of petrol. Some of the affiliates of the NLC include the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), among others.

In a letter written to the affiliates, which was signed by the NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the Congress said: “We bring you greetings from the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress. You will recall that arising from the National Executive Council meeting held on June 2, 2023, it was decided that Congress will embark on a nationwide action and withdrawal of services, against the fraudulent increase in the prices of fuel across the thirty-six states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the FCT.

“Please be informed that the nationwide action will commence on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. To this effect, all national leaders are expected to mobilise their members for the action and ensure full compliance with the directives as services in both the public and private sectors are expected to be fully withdrawn by Wednesday, June 7, 2023. All Presidents and General Secretaries are expected to help ensure the implementation of the decisions of the National Executive Council,” the NLC explained.

During his inaugural speech at the Eagle Square in Abuja, the President, Bola Tinubu declared that the era of subsidy payment on fuel has ended.
Tinubu had also disclosed that the 2023 budget did not make provision for fuel subsidy as such, further payment is no longer justifiable.
“The fuel subsidy is gone,” Tinubu had declared, adding that his government would instead channel funds into infrastructure and other areas to strengthen the economy.

The presidential pronouncement led to an instant return of fuel queues across the country, with Nigerians lamenting the sharp increase in the price of petrol at the various filling stations.
This development led to the resistance of the organised labour to what the workers described as Tinubu’s unilateral action.
To cushion the attendant hardship, President Tinubu later promised to review the minimum wage to align with the current economic realities of the country.

According to him, the federal and state governments need to take a look at the minimum wage together and also strengthen the source and application of the country’s revenue.
He made this known on Friday while meeting with the members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), who declared support for him on the removal of subsidy.

Protest in the East and leave us alone! Is that too difficult for you to adhere?

* No work No pay!

* NLC is not our Employer. * We are paid regularly as due.
* Our salaries was increased as at January 2023
* Government is not owing us any Arrears.
* Our Promotion is regular.
* NLC has no any known Welfare package for Nigerian workers Except @ STRIKES !!!
* During Covd-19 they were nowhere to be found
* During Naira Redesigning they were dead asleep.
* NLC were one political sided.
* We saw what happened during 22/23 politicking in Nigeria, the whole of NLC was one sided for the first time for OBI's Labour party.
* The NLC members are now apolitical Jobbers.
*Obi, Atiku, Tinubu, Kwankwaso, Sowore, and others presidential candidates promised to removed subsidies.
* Then why is NLC/TUC organising strike against the removal of the Subsidies by TINUBU ?
* Come Monday 05/06/2023 we will be at our place of work peacefully because there is no conginial reason of going on strike, please.
One Nigeria and
God bless Nigeria
Amen!!

I don't understand this news

What is NLC north and NLC south west

The last time I checked, NLC got one national body

Is APC trying to create a phantom NLC faction masquerading as NLC North and NLC South west

Is Tinubu and his minions now creating the impression that every other part of the country is against the subsidy removal except the so called North and South west

Are we now in a government of North and South west collabo against the rest of the country

It will surely backfire

When we say that Tinubu ran the most tribal, religious and ethnic divisive campaign ever witnessed in this country, we have the facts and this is one of it

Trying to use the SE and LP to deflect your criminal drug-Lord and his criminal govt from their patent failures already? Lol..we're not the ones fighting gidigbo on the streets like savages over fuel, that's a badge of honor for your brothers in the SW. Focus on your APC crisis and leave the SE alone, we're more focused on the project of developing and fusing together our region with the new governors and legislators.

This was when there was scarcity in the first few days not now.

There's no more scarcity now, just the adjusted new prices.

NLC should be asking for palliatives not returning back to the status quo.

Returning to the status quo is only beneficial to oil markers at the expense of bankrupting Nigeria.

NLC should be asking for Palliatives inform of subsidized public transportation and higher minimum wage etc.

So the government cannot provide this palliatives first, increase minimum wage and ensure that it is implemented before engaging in this thoughtless subsidy removal.

If Northern and South Western states don't participate in the strike, they are saboteurs. Why will they pull out? Even if NLC is working for and with LP, is the strike action justified? The answer is YES. While I also don't believe in subsidizing the fuel, I believe NLC is fighting for soft landing like salary increase, subsidized bus rates etc. Even if Obi or Atiku leads a protest today in regards to this, well-meaning Nigerians should join. They have met the president and the meeting didn't have a favorable outcome, hence the call for strike. Together we stand, divided we fall undecided

it's important that the goverment shock the crooks in the system Making money from the subsidy because they have often outsmarted the goverment in past, they will simply quickly take positions to frustrate the removal.

It's the reason Obasanjo, Yaradua, Jonathan and Buhari couldn't remove the subsidy.

NLC is the political branch of Labour Party while ipob is the terrorist branch.

The political branch is responsible for attacking Tinubu's decisions as the president. This is one of the unintelligent approaches to locate the exact spot where Obi's manhood is located.

The terrorist branch is divided into the social media and the illiterate department. The social media department is responsible for insulting anyone against Peter Obi while the illiterate department are on ground to physically attack anyone with view different Peter Obi's.

Since the terrorist branch has failed, the baton is now handed over to the political branch.

Majority of Nigerians are very okay with the oil subsidy removal despite the attendant hardship because they know the implications and the need to enforce it immediately. Nigeria can't be wasting her meagre resources subsidising fuel for neighbouring countries.

Whichever way the govt does it, you will still complain. So govt is no longer interested in that shit again. They simply do it the way they deem it best for them, because no matter the matter, you must complain. So no point.

Divide and conquer this has always been their only strategy to confront any problem that comes their way. Was the decision of the NLC to embark on this strike solely taken by only the NLC president or by all the national executives of the union? The western and northern NLC can refuse to join the strike if they buy fuel at a cheaper rate in their regions some nigerians have already gotten used to suffering.

But it is on record that Tinubu sponsored protests against subsidy removal during Goodluck Jonathan regime. We all remembered the Occupy Nigeria protests all over Nigeria and Ojota in January 2012

So what has changed?

Tinubu didn't sponsor anything. He simply used the opportunity provided by the platform to play opposition to the Jonathan goverment.

The platform was not created by him but by the people who are now set to fight him.

Subsidy removal at this point is necessary because Nigeria has borrowed to the extent that nearly 70% of our annual budget is going to finance our debt.

Nigeria might default on some loans soon and the crises will be worst than the crises subsidy removal will generate.

I am not here to argue with you on whether it is necessary to remove it or not

Rather, to remind you that the same reason Tinubu rejected subsidy removal during Goodluck Jonathan regime is the same reason Nigerians are rejecting subsidy removal today. Simple

Tinubu said to Jonathan that he has destroyed the social contract with the Nigerian people by removing subsidy

Today, Nigerians are telling to Tinubu that he has destroyed the social contract he has with the people when he launched his renewed hope manifesto by removing subsidy on petrol

Nigerians rejected subsidy removal during Jonathan era not just Tinubu but every political actor of goodwill knows that Nigeria can no longer bear the cost of subsidy today.

From Tinubu to Obi to ATIKU knows subsidy must go and they all campaiged based on its removal.

So what is the difference if Tinubu won and followed through on his promise?
