The Fattening room
This is a long-forgotten wedding custom that is still carried out among the Efiks, Ibibios, and Calabar residents of Nigeria. Young girls who have reached puberty are put into a chamber for ‘fattening up’ in order to prepare them for womanhood, as it is believed by this old practice that being fat is a magnificent pointer to wealth, fertility, prosperity, and beauty.

After being welcomed into the fattening room, the ladies’ family and friends are forbidden from meeting them, and the girls are given talks on social, marital, and cultural manners by the community’s elders (women). To speed up the process of fattening, they are primarily fed high-content carbs, and they also receive aesthetic treatments.
