Former Miami city auditor Igwe to get his $263,255 severance after all

The Miami city attorney’s office has done an about-face on compensation due to long-time internal auditor Victor Igwe, whose contract was not renewed earlier this year.
In an email sent Thursday to the mayor, city commissioners and finance director, City Attorney Julie Bru said after being asked to re-evaluate Igwe’s final payout, she determined there was nothing in Igwe’s 2007 contract that stipulated he wasn’t to be paid after separating from the city.

“It is my opinion that the operative provisions dealing with vacation and sick leave as well as severance are clear and unambiguous,” Bru wrote. “Therefore, the … benefits and severance is authorized for payment.”

Three weeks ago, Igwe threatened to take the city to court after the attorney’s office opined that he wasn’t due any money because his contract did not “directly” address whether he was due unused sick and vacation time and a six-month severance if his contract expired.

Now, all that is needed for Igwe to collect $263,255 is for the city manager and the finance department to sign off on the check.

Reached at home Friday, Igwe hadn’t heard the news.

“Really, are you sure about that?” he asked a reporter. “I wonder why she changed her mind. That’s one less fight for us to have. I’m due that money. Not only do they owe me that, they owe me interest.”

Igwe, who had been the city’s internal auditor for 12 years, was escorted from Miami Riverside Center in June after his contract expired. Actually, it had expired two months earlier, but during a confusing commission meeting at which Igwe addressed commissioners late at night, then fainted, the commission agreed to extend it with all benefits for 60 days.

Meantime, Commissioner Frank Carollo was to work with Igwe on terms for a new deal. That never happened, and Igwe’s time ran out. Miami has yet to hire a new permanent auditor.

he'd better spend it wisely because money has wings.

if he plans to go the aristo route then he needs another well paying job to finance it.

just saying.

good luck to him.
