How To Host Your Own Website: 5 Simple Steps To Follow by nkolakacharles: 1:37pm On Jun 12, 2023
Here’s how to host your own website in five steps:

1. Choose a Content Management System (CMS)
Unless you’ve already chosen the platform you’ll be building your site on, the first thing you’ll need to do is select a CMS (Content Management System). The reason for this is that hosting your site depends on which platform it’s built on. For the average web developer, there are two main platforms you can choose from: WordPress or a one-stop shop like Wix or Squarespace, or Shopify.

What’s the difference between a WordPress and a website builder? Ease of use Customization Cost WordPress is a free open source CMS. It does require third party web hosting. Flexibility WordPress allows you to create almost any kind of site with almost any kind of functionality. However, it’s much more complex to use and requires a relatively high learning curve. Website Builder Website builders are built from the ground up to make website building easier. They include web hosting, so you don’t have to buy and

2. Purchase a Web Hosting Service

Once you’ve decided to use WordPress, you’ll need to decide which web hosting service you’ll be using. There are many different web hosting providers out there, from Bluehost to DreamHost to Hostinger to IONOS. Each one of them offers a similar but slightly different range of features (for example, storage and bandwidth limit, uptime guarantee, speed, duration of contract and price). If your website is a new one, then you’ll want to make sure that the web hosting plan you choose includes the following: Free Domain Name Free SSL Certificate One-Click WordPress Installation (Bluehost)

3. Get a Domain Name
If you don't have a domain name already, you can get one directly from a top-rated domain registrar, like Namecheap or Domain.com. You can also get a domain name from Google Domains or any other domain registrar. You can also register your domain at any domain name registrar, but you don't have to pay registration fees the first year. Your web hosting provider may include your domain name in your account, so you won't have to pay for it. Most of the time, you can get a domain name directly from your hosting provider. This saves you time since you don't need to manually link your domain to the web host.

4. Connect Your Domain To Your Web Host

How does a domain name connect to a web host? The way a domain name connects to a web host depends on the origin of the domain name. For instance, a domain name acquired through a web hosting provider will be automatically connected to a web host. On the other hand, if a domain name is already owned, it will need to be manually connected to the web host.

Go to the site from which you bought your domain name (namecheap, GoDaddy, etc.) Navigate to your domain name settings and point your domain to the hosting server you want to use. Your web hosting account should have name servers, also called domain name servers or DNS. These are the addresses you use to point to your domain name. For example, if you have a domain named “ www.example.com,” when people type that into your site’s address bar, they’ll end up on the content you host on your chosen server.

Once the name servers have been found, you will need to log into your domain name configuration and click on the "DNS Settings" tab. You will then be prompted to replace the existing domain name servers by the ones your web host has given you. Saving this will cause your domain to point to the host server within the next couple of hours, but this can happen almost immediately.

5. Install WordPress (or Migrate An Existing Site)

The final step is to install WordPress on your domain using your web hosting accounts. The majority of the top web hosting providers provide free one-Click WordPress installation. This allows you to connect your domain and your web hosting plan with a single click. The method you use will depend on your chosen web hosting provider, but it’s usually available through your own web hosting account (or cPanel). The easiest way to migrate your existing WordPress site and connect to your new hosting provider is through a WordPress Migration Service. This is usually free through your hosting provider, but some hosts charge an extra fee for this service.

Thanks for breaking down the steps so succinctly! The choice between a CMS like WordPress and a website builder is indeed a pivotal one, and you've highlighted the pros and cons quite well. For those who want a more hands-on approach with maximum flexibility, WordPress is an excellent option. I recently went through the process for my wordpress blog and the experience was very rewarding. Additionally, I think it's worth noting that with WordPress, the plethora of plugins available can help customize and enhance your site's functionality. It's almost like building with LEGO blocks - you can keep adding as per your needs.
