Do not stay in a work environment where the boss consistently use vulgar or foul languages on employees. An environment that permit either bosses or employees to use foul languages is not a healthy organisation. Whether used during an angry rant or as a casual form of expression, profanity at work can have a negative effect. It can disrupt team cohesiveness, reduce productivity, and decrease morale. The natural psychology of a man becomes what he constantly sees or hears. Also, take a look at yourself because company culture starts at the top, have you started behaving rudely because of the environment you find yourself. The Wrike survey found 66% of workers are more likely to swear if their boss swears. In other cases, vulgar language, when tolerated and pervasive in the workplace could create a hostile work environment. We rise by lifting others. Hmm! life can be dramatic at times when we least expect it. A candidate became so uncomfortable immediately he saw me among an interview panel for a job he applied for. It turned out that we had met about 4 years ago. He held the ace he thought! Under normal circumstances, he should be glad to see someone he knows among the panel, but the situation was different in this scenario. He was the HR officer for one of my previous clients, and he made the job application and interview very stressful for my team. Despite all my efforts to talk to him and convince him to maintain his professional conduct, he refused to change, and the entire process was fraught with tension and unnecessary stress. We were at infancy stage and we needed all the help, favour and goodwill to get repeat clients. Not all days were bright and sunny. Behind the curtain, we were stressed and overtly anxious to break even. This is a period we pray for clients to turn up every month so we could afford to pay salaries and cover operating expenses. He would politely not respond to mails timely and calls were albeit frosty. At the end, the client called off the recruitment brief and we absolutely earned nothing. No commitment fee nor a compensation for the completed screening and shortlisting stages. The moment he realized I was a part of the panel for the job interview he came for, he was visibly shaken. I went to greet him warmly, and he responded nervously. It was then I knew his nemesis was catching up with him. Regardless of his lack of professionalism when we worked together the last time, I tried my best to ensure that the job went to the most qualified. When it was his turn to be interviewed, he was apparently uncomposed and this affected his performance. As much as I tried to make him comfortable by asking simple questions, his nervousness was so obvious. Hence, he wasn’t chosen for the job as the panel concluded that he was not confident enough to work on this role. Here’s the catch; no matter what kind of things you might be going through, you should always ensure that your mannerism and professional conduct at work are intact. Learning Curve: 👉🏽Respect those you come in contact with. 👉🏽Leave a positive experience regardless of your position and title. 👉🏽Remain humble. 👉🏽Display your professionalism and be at your best. As an employee, you should treat all clients, partners, and colleagues with kindness and a high level of professionalism. Remember, respect begets respect. This candidate’s non-challant attitude came back to strike him when he needed a new job. In conclusion, learn to be polite to people and treat them with respect irrespective of their age or status.
