2023 African Footballer Of The Year Top 5 Contenders by Samokoh40: 1:57pm On Jun 23, 2023
With the seasoned winners of the CAF African Footballer of the year, Mohammed salah and sadio mane had a season below their usual standards, 2023 African Footballer of the year, will most likely be a contest for greenhorns, considering that a lot of new prospects sprung up in the 2022/2023 season, which will notably form the basis of the eventual winner. Here is my top 5 ranking of whom should nick the converted prized asset:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cy5nfuMMdgA

1. Victor osimhen:

Osimhen blazed through the season for his club SSC Napoli, with massive goal contributions which steered them to winning the scudetto ( Italian shield) after 33 years of waiting for the converted prize. On a personal level, he broke numerous records, viz;

•First African To Win The Golden Boot In The Serie A For Most Goals Scored

•First African To Win The Best Overall Striker Award,

•The Highest African Goalscorer Of All Time In The Serie A,

•Most Goals Scored By An African Player In A Single Serie A Season and

•Joined Zlatan Ibrahimovic by beign the only players To Win The Serie A Title And Golden Boot In The Same Season.

On the National team front he once again justified his worth by leading Nigeria to qualify for 2024 African cup of Nations to be hosted in Ivory Coast with a game to spare, scoring 7 goals in the qualifying round and ended up as the top scorer of the qualifying round in the process.
2. Yassine bounou:

The Moroccan Goalkeeper, conceded just 39 goals and kept 4 clean sheets in 25 matches in the La Liga 2022/2023 season. That means when Bounou is in goal, his team conceded a goal every 55 minutes. Yassine Bounou's per 90 minutes goals conceded stat is 1.63.

In terms of raw goalkeeping, he's saved 67 of the 108 shots faced, meaning Yassine save percentage is 62.04%. That isn't bad for a Goalkeeper playing for a team that had issues most part of the season, with success coming at the tail end of the campaign. Albeit That, he held his own when it mattered, which was on show when his heroics in the penalty shootout against Roma, won Sevilla yet another Europa League for the umpteenth time. On the international front, he dear many into their hearts with breathtaking performance at the World cup, where he shone like a million stars, helping Morocco reach semi-finals of the Fifa world cup, a feat no African country had achieved previously.

3. Riyadh mahrez:
The Algerian football sensation did not have a Stella performance known of him previously, but he made this list regardless, because of his important contribution to the treble winning feat of his club Manchester City. He seems to have lost his regular start, but whenever called upon, he contributed immensely, which was shown when he contributed two assist that won mancity the FA cup at the expense of Manchester United. On the International level, Algeria surprised alot by not qualifying for the World cup, but they seems to have put it all behind, considering the way they went through AFCON 2024 qualifying phase by will nicking the ticket with two games to spare and not experiencing defeat. Their ever reliable captain was instrumental to this.

4. Andre Onana:
Onana had a contrasting fortune at both club and Country. In the former, he was unbelievable, turned heads round with his exquisite performances that guided his team to reaching the glamorous UEFA champions league final only to lose disappointly to mancity via a solitary goal, which he had no fault in. On the international scene, he is currently on exile after falling out with the National team coach at 2022 World cup in Qatar.

5. Vincent aboubakar:
A trojan, to say that least. He is one that leaves all for both club and Country. He might not be heard so much, considering he is playing for less fancied Istanbul Besiktas in Turkey.

An old war horse for his country side, the indomitable lion of Cameron. He once proved his mettle, where his scored 3 goals at the World cup, and notably scoring a wonder of a goal against the Seleção of Brazil in their final group game, although that didn't ensure their passage to the next round, be that as it may, he left an indelible mark and worth being in contention for the best individual award in the continent.
