Sikh weddings, also known as Anand Karaj, are celebrated with great joy and reverence both within India and around the world. When performed outside of India, Sikh communities strive to uphold the traditions and rituals that are integral to the ceremony.

Choice of Venue: Sikh weddings outside of India typically take place in Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) or specially designated venues that can accommodate the ceremony and the gathering of family and friends. These venues are adorned with the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture.

The Anand Karaj Ceremony: The Anand Karaj ceremony is the central ritual of a Sikh wedding. It is conducted by a Granthi (Sikh priest) or a designated religious leader. The ceremony begins with the recitation of the Ardas, a prayer seeking blessings for the couple's union.

Rituals and Customs:

Exchange of Garlands:The bride and groom exchange garlands, symbolizing their acceptance of each other and their commitment to marriage.

Reading from the Guru Granth Sahib: The holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, is opened, and hymns and verses from it are recited. These passages impart wisdom and guidance for the couple's married life.

Recitation of the Laavan:The Laavan, composed by Guru Ram Das Ji, are four hymns that signify the different stages of married life. Each Laav is recited, and after each recitation, the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib, representing their journey together.

Conclusion:
Sikh weddings performed outside of India closely follow the traditional rituals and customs observed in India. Whether in a Gurdwara or a designated venue, these weddings aim to preserve the sanctity and significance of the Anand Karaj ceremony. Through the exchange of garlands, recitation of holy verses, and walking around the Guru Granth Sahib, Sikh weddings conducted abroad reflect the rich heritage and values of Sikhism, celebrating the sacred bond of marriage in accordance with Sikh principles. The beauty and essence of these weddings are often captured through the art of Sikh wedding photography, allowing couples to cherish and share the precious moments of their special day for years to come.

Yes many Sikhs in Nigeria, Sikhs have been migrating to East Africa since 1890's. They established themselves as a very hard working, honest, religious and skilled community. Their contribution to East Africa is phenomenal.
