When it comes to choosing a compact sedan for your daily driving needs, the Hyundai Elantra proves to be a pragmatic and stylish choice. With its competitive fuel economy, an array of standard safety technologies, and an abundance of available creature comforts, the Elantra stands out in the crowd. Hyundai has gone the extra mile by offering a diverse lineup of six different models, each equipped with different mechanical components, ranging from the entry-level SE to the Limited Hybrid. However, while the Elantra impresses with its features and aesthetics, it may fall short in terms of driving dynamics when compared to top-tier small cars like the Honda Civic and Mazda 3.

What's New for 2023?

The 2023 Hyundai Elantra undergoes several minor changes, along with one significant revision. The manual transmission option for the N Line model has been discontinued, making the dual-clutch transmission (DCT) the sole choice. Furthermore, both the N Line and SEL models equipped with the Convenience Package now come standard with a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.3-inch infotainment display. Additionally, SEL Convenience Package models receive 17-inch wheels instead of 16-inch ones, and the SEL Premium Package is no longer available.

Pricing and Choosing the Ideal Model:

SE: Starting at $22,065
SEL: Starting at $23,315
Blue Hybrid: Starting at $25,665
Limited: Starting at $27,915
N Line: Starting at $28,615
Limited Hybrid: Starting at $30,265

Among the lineup, the midrange SEL model strikes the perfect balance between price and features. In addition to the SE's offerings, the SEL provides a hands-free trunk release and SiriusXM. Opting for the SEL opens the door to more worthwhile options, such as the SEL Convenience package. This package includes a 10.3-inch digital cluster, a 10.3-inch center display with built-in navigation, adaptive cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a wireless smartphone charging pad, heated front seats, heated mirrors, and more.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance:

The standard powertrain for non-hybrid Elantra models is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, generating a modest 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. However, for those seeking a more spirited driving experience, the sportier N Line model offers a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, delivering a livelier 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid models employ a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, providing slightly less horsepower than the base engine at 139, but compensating with 195 pound-feet of torque, equal to that of the N Line. While the SE and SEL models utilize a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the N Line, Blue Hybrid, and Limited Hybrid models are equipped with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). It's worth noting that the N Line features a seven-speed DCT, while the hybrids have a six-speed DCT. If you're an enthusiast seeking the ultimate performance, the Elantra N model is reviewed separately, although the N Line offers a more affordable alternative without compromising on athleticism or ride quality.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG:

The 2023 Elantra impresses with its fuel efficiency across the lineup. The EPA estimates that the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine variants achieve up to 33 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway. Models equipped with the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine reach estimates as high as 28 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. The hybrid Elantra leads the pack with a rating of 53 mpg in the city and 56 mpg on the highway. However, during our rigorous 75-mph highway fuel-economy route testing, the Elantra hybrid achieved a slightly lower result of 48 mpg, while the non-hybrid Limited model with the base engine recorded 38 mpg. By comparison, a Corolla hybrid achieved an impressive 56 mpg in our highway test. For more detailed information on the Elantra's fuel economy, visit the EPA's official website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo:

Step inside the Hyundai Elantra, and you'll be greeted by a cabin that perfectly complements its dramatic exterior. The futuristic design of the dashboard and center console wraps around the driver, creating an immersive driving experience. On the passenger's side, a minimalist approach adds to the sleek aesthetics. One notable feature is the single LED strip that spans the width of the car, following the dashboard-spanning air vent from the steering column to the passenger's-side door panel. The Elantra offers generous passenger volume, particularly in the rear seat, rivaling more spacious competitors like the Sentra and Volkswagen Jetta. While the Elantra's interior may not boast luxurious materials throughout, it manages to strike a balance within its price class. As for cargo space, the Elantra's trunk impressively accommodates six carry-on suitcases during our testing.

In conclusion, the 2023 Hyundai Elantra proves to be a compelling choice in the compact sedan segment, thanks to its stylish design, competitive fuel economy, and abundance of available features. Whether you opt for the sportier N Line model, the fuel-efficient hybrid, or any other variant in the lineup, the Elantra offers a range of options to suit different preferences and needs. While it may not deliver the same driving excitement as some of its competitors, the Elantra's overall package, value proposition, and futuristic interior make it a worthy contender in its class.
