Harnessing Emerging Technologies For The Advancing Of National Growth (new) by SirElaw(m): 10:49am On Oct 05, 2011
Today the rate at which technology advances is simply amazing. The primary evidence of the human knowledge, as shown in patents and academic publications, doubles every two years (for nanotechnology). In this present age, a lot of breakthroughs are being made in the technological world and this simply means the introduction of new, interesting and mind-blowing inventions.
For a nation to really make an impact in the world scene now, these emerging technologies are to be implemented in most, if not all of her sectors. This is made obvious from the fact that the eight most developed nations in the world (G8) are also the eight most technologically advanced countries.
Nigeria, right now, is nowhere to be found when it comes to emerging technology. It takes approximately 3-4 years for new technologies from around the world to get to Nigeria. It took the GSM 10 normal years which would be light years if the rate of technological advancement is considered.
We can’t of course jump to the front of technological advancement now, but conscious effort s need to be made towards this. We could start by focusing more attention on our research sector, more funds should be pumped into this sector so as to guarantee our future technology-wise. There are new inventions that will definitely improve our power sector and reduce our dependency on diesel and petrol-run generators. Nigeria is the largest importer of generators in the world, thereby giving France, who are the largest exporters of generators (manufacturing about 18% of the world’s supply) a very big and promising market. Though the difference in economic growth of these two nations cannot be solely attributed to this factor, it is enough prove that it is more profitable to produce than to just be an end user. We need to stop subsidizing importation of petroleum product and encourage investment in refineries. If refine our crude oil we won’t need the dollars to import. We will be selling and of course that will mean a major boost for our IGR.
The EEESS electronic week 2011 which comes up just 2 weeks after the 51st independence of this great nation is aimed at raising the awareness of the importance  of emerging technology in enhancing national growth. The expected outcome is that all stakeholders will accept the challenge and champion a cause towards the development of Nigeria by harnessing emerging technology.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA.
