It refers to people, their capabilities, their assets (both material and social), their income and activities required for a means of living such as food access in a household. Development agents are required to have proven skills in livelihood assessments in order for them to be able to identify the most appropriate livelihood interventions. Good skills on how to analyse livelihoods intervention is equally important. This training programme introduces the concept of livelihoods and provides guidance on assessing and analyzing livelihoods. The course would also deliver skills on selecting and interpreting livelihoods indicators. DURATION 5 Days LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the training, the learner will be able to: • Understand basic concepts in livelihood analysis. • Understand the role of the market in livelihoods. • Identify the livelihoods components in real examples. • Recognize how assessing livelihoods improves the development intervention analysis. • Understand how different livelihood assessments help to plan interventions in different development contexts. • Understand the criteria for selecting and collecting livelihoods indicators. • Understand the skills and knowledge required to select, collect and interpret livelihood indicators. COURSE OUTLINE Module 1: Introduction to Livelihoods • Basic concepts • Components of livelihoods • Role of Markets in livelihoods Module 2: Assessing Livelihoods • Livelihoods assessment principles • Supporting livelihoods in different contexts • Stages in livelihoods assessment Module 3: Livelihoods Assessment Approaches • Household and Livelihoods Security Approach(HLS) • Livelihoods Approach to Emergency Food Security Assessments • Household Economy Approach (HEA) • Economic Security Analysis Approach • Early warning Approaching Food Security Analysis • Food and Health Analysis of Food Insecurity • Vulnerable Group Profiling • Integrated Food Security Analysis System • Livelihood Interventions Module 4: Livelihood Indicators • What are livelihood indicators • Context of livelihoods indicators • Skills and knowledge required to select, collect and interpret livelihood indicators • Criteria for selecting livelihood indicators Livelihood Analysis • Social capital • Human capital • Natural capital • Physical capital • Financial capital • Market analysis • Using BEEM and SWOT analysis to make livelihood strategies Module 5: Cross-Cutting Issues in Livelihood Assessment • Integration of GIS and RS in livelihood analysis • Integration of ICT in livelihood assessment and analysis • Monitoring and evaluation in livelihoods • Integration of gender issues TRAINING CUSTOMIZATION This training can also be customized for your institution upon request.
