President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the National Assembly seeking an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act to allow the Federal Government to source N500 billion for palliative to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

The letter was read on the floor of the House during Wednesday’s plenary by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

The letter stated that the money would be sourced from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act of N819.5 billion.

The letter reads in part: “I write to request the approval of the House of Representatives an amendment of the 2022 appropriation act in accordance with the law. The request has become necessary in other to source for funds to provide necessary palliatives to cushion the effect of the recent removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.

“The sum of N500 billion only has been extracted from the 2022 appropriation act of N819.536 for the provision of palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal. I expect that the House will speedily consider the request.”

Responding to the President’s letter, Speaker Abbas assured that the House would deliberate on the matter during Thursday’s plenary session and encouraged members to come prepared to contribute to the discussion.

The request for N500 billion in palliatives comes amid growing public anger over the recent removal of fuel subsidy. The removal of the subsidy has led to an increase in the price of petrol.

However, the government has defended itself, saying removing the subsidy is necessary to save money and attract investment.

Another corruption channel about to be opened. Instead of probing that corrupt former minister of Humanitarian Disaster under Buhari, he want to open another conduit pipe for stealing. Because politicians will make sure they loot this funds.

Has any monies be used for its intended cause as far as the corrupt APC government of the last 8 years is concerned? Don't you understand the gravity of the debt burden on ground today?

GOVERNMENT: He like say all this people dey mad. Wetin person fit do to satisfy them self.

I don't know where some of you guys get your education from. Where do you want the fund to come from. From the already deficit budget?
This 500 billion naira is part of what is already saved from fuel and currency subsidies.

A sensible govt will be transparent as per how much they are saving from subsidy removal and where they are diverting it to alleviate the sufferings of the citizen. We rigged a rogue in to the helms, the economy is going pear shaped, masses have become habitual trekkers without ability to afford food, the currency is taking by the day.
When your eyes are clear all the Yoruba ronu people that think this dude is a genius, would come back to apologise.

Tinubu should just use the money to subsidize fuel

He shouldn't use the money to buy bags of rice and noodles to be shared as palliatives which will lead to a situation where some connected party members will just hijack it
