The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is set to begin the evaluation process for the answer scripts of more than 1.6 million students who took the May/June 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

This evaluation holds significant importance for these students as it determines their eligibility for admission into tertiary institutions in the upcoming academic session.


According to reports, a large portion of the 1.6 million students had registered for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as candidates awaiting their WASSCE results.

The coordination process for marking the answer scripts for the 2023 school exams will commence on Wednesday, July 11, and conclude on Tuesday, August 1. A total of 81,559 examiners will be involved in the marking process, taking place across 85 traditional venues and one e-marking venue.


The WASSCE was conducted between Monday, May 8, and Friday, June 23. In May, Mr. Patrick Areghan, the Head of National Office at WAEC, revealed that the examination had been attempted by 1,621,853 candidates from 20,851 secondary schools. Out of this figure, 798,810 were males, accounting for 49.25 percent, while 823,043 were females, representing 50.75 percent of the total candidates.


These statistics indicate an increase in the number of female candidates and a decrease in male candidates compared to the 2022 examination. Overall, the candidature for the 2023 WASSCE (SC) has risen by 13,868 compared to the previous year's figure of 1,607,985.
