Colonialism has little to do with military force and has more to do with cultural and religious control. People won't surrender to a colonial value and power if they don't consider such culture and religion to be superior to their own. It is mental slavery that water the grounds for physical conquest. Also, when people fight against colonialism, they are fighting to protect their values and what they represent.
