A 32-year-old man, Samson Sikiru, said to be a drug addict, on Sunday, allegedly strangulated his mother to death, in Itanrin, in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The suspect’s younger brother, who is a night guard, raised the alarm after he returned from night duty and discovered that his mother had been killed.

It was learned that Samson was arrested when neighbours discovered that he was behind the death of his mother and, subsequently, handed him over to the police.

A source explained that the suspect had been a known drug addict, saying he had fled home five years ago before he returned recently.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun, Omotola Odutola, said the command was aware of the incident.

According to Odutola, the suspect is currently a neuropsychiatric patient.
The PPRO explained that family members occasionally tied down Samson with ropes to prevent him from injuring himself or anyone.

“He had remained with his mother, whom he visited during Sallah celebrations, even though he is known for his retard tendency, but his condition was being managed to the best of the knowledge of his mother.

“It is not yet clear if there was any provocation by his mother, but, preliminary investigation revealed that earlier same day, he was tied up in the house, only for him to loose himself and descended on his mother and strangled her,” she narrated.

Odutola said marks of violence were found around the deceased neck, including lacerations discovered around her right legs, saying this proved there was force or violence.

“Samson Sikiru is still in the police custody, but, nothing much has been gotten from him, as he has not answered any coherent questions put across to him,” she added.

Illiteracy is a disease. Drug addiction induced mental illness also happens to the rich and mighty all around the world (case in point = FFK) plus one of my lecturer - a Prof at UI Medical school (although his was not drug induced) and their families do NOT resort to tying them down with ropes like a GOAT but they check them into a psychiatric hospital for proper treatment and medication and they get well withing weeks.

Similar think happened to British heavyweight Boxer Frank Bruno when he go smoke igbo wey pass him brain power and added sleeplessness to this which pushed his brain chemistry into the imbalanced region and he started walking out of the house barefooted and his observant family called the ambulance and police who had to take him to a psychiatric hospital where he was sectioned (detained) under the mental health act and treated with medication until he became better and he was discharged.

The same illiteracy affected the family of our late footballer Rashidi Yekini who had a nervous breakdown after all his football earnings invested in a Bureau De Change disappeared in a robbery operation and sent him over the edge and his family made it a habit to get men to forcefully take him to a local healer with no medical qualifications whose treatment methods included tying up the obviously distressed patient and from the pictures i saw of Yekini's body during the Muslim burial rites, he must have tried to struggle with his captors and must have fallen on something sharp which punctured his abdomen leading to poor Rashidi Yekini's death as the belly side of the cloth used to wrap his corpse (muslim burial) was stained with blood.
