No fewer than 20 persons were burnt to death in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Sunday.

It was gathered that the victims were scooping fuel from a petrol tanker that fell and spilled its content along the Benin–Ore-Sagamu Expressway on Sunday.

According to an eyewitness, the fire was ignited by a spark from a phone held by one of the persons who were scooping fuel.

The eyewitness stated that the victims of the disaster included three children and a pregnant woman who brought a sum of N100,000 to the scene to buy fuel.

The eyewitness said, “We were inside the church when the tanker fell and spilled its contents on the road. Shortly after it fell down and spilled the fuel on the road, some persons rushed to the place to scoop fuel.

At that time, the rain was falling. Despite that, people still rushed there and started scooping fuel when the fire started after a spark from a phone.

“At the scene, we have counted about three children and over 15 bodies we can’t identify, and also a pregnant woman that wanted to buy the fuel also died in the incident. They were burnt beyond recognition

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and described the victims as fuel scoopers.

“They were scooping fuel from a tanker when the fire started. We have commenced an investigation into the matter,” the PPRO stated.

But one certain idi.ot got burnt when he went back to scoop more after scooping more than five(5) drums already.i don't have r I p to waste on him

I won't call this poverty, this is just plain stupidity.
You no wn buy petrol #700 abi, okay.

Funny thing it will happen again somewhere, and some people (even the ones here) will still rush to go scoop some free petrol.

Don't be so insensitive. With the current economic hardship amidst the cost of fuel, they wanted to make some money to survive by scooping the fuel probably to sell. Unfortunately, it went wrong for them. Blame the government that has impoverished its people

Lol... "Economic hardship" doesn't justify lack of common sense.. we all know fuel is highly volatile...
And besides sef, are you aware that that fuel (consignment) is owned by someone? That's someone's business...
Because the truck developed issues on the way, don't you know that those spilled fuel is business losses.. and these ones are outrightly stealing it....
So please spare me your "Economic hardship"...

So if the fuel spills on the ground and is wasting and people scoop some of it, the owner would lose? I don't think so. However, I blame them for throwing caution to the wind and embarking on a dangerous adventure. This comes back to the sad state of the economy. So please show some sympathy

They had nothing to contribute in the first place. They are where they belong.
