Jaye Lo: Dancing in front of mosque not provocative, don’t apologise, Soyinka tells Davido

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has said that no apology should be offered by popular Afrobeat artist, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, to some Muslims who are requesting that he apologise over an alleged offensive video clip posted on his social media pages last week.

Recall that the DMW owner had posted a 45-second long video clip of his signee, Logos Olori’s new song, ‘Jaye Lo,’ on Friday, July 21, promoting the song ahead of the official release. The video caused controversy as it portrayed men dressed as praying mallams, dancing in front of a mosque in a scene, rather than engaging in prayer.

Tribune Online reports that the ‘Fem’ crooner, after coming under heavy criticism, bowed to pressure and deleted the video on Monday.

While weighing in with his view on the controversy, Soyinka in a letter released Tuesday and titled “Davido Video,” dismissed the claim that dancing in front of a mosque is an act of provocation, insisting that it is an “affirmation of the unified sensibility of the spiritual in human.”

Reacting to the calls for an apology to the Muslim community by Senator Sheu Sani and some other aggrieved Muslims, Soyinka said, “It should come as no surprise that I equally and absolutely disagree with Shehu Sani if indeed, as reported, he has demanded an apology from Davido on behalf of the Muslim community.

“No apology is required, None should be offered. Let us stop battening down our heads in the mush of contrived contrition – we know where contrition, apology, and restitution remain clamorous in the cause of closure and above all – justice.”

Beautiful sir, he will not apologize to anybody.

One question i have for the Islamarebad is that. Is threatening Yorubas not to practice their religion in their villages not provocative or blasphemous?

I mean it’s enough for us to ban all mosques operation in Yoruba Land!

Was this issue about dancing infront of mosque, or was it about muslims breaking out in dance after prayer?

Where is video?

Hypocritical North.
They think they can bully people and subject them to their whims and caprices.
They cannot do promote against Bandits and Boko Haram that are kidnapping, raping and ravaging communities. Abi their religion allows these crimes against humanity ni?
They have not gone to force their brother Hadi Sirika that stole billions and defrauded the Country with Fake Air Nigeria to come and apologize and return the money he collected. Abi their religion doesn't promote morality Or they don't uphold uphold that?
They are busy using Northern DSS to drag Emefiele who the culprit of the cashless policy whereas their thieving Buhari was the one behind the policy.
Let them continue their yeye protests and go and force Davido to apologize.
Arrant hypocritical fools hiding under religion to perpetrate injustices and bigotry.

Soyinka is neither a Muslim nor Christian. Typical of many professors.

They tend to abandon religion for humanism or Africa traditional religion. You cant win them in any religious arguments

For as much as we are told about religious tolerance in Yoruba culture, there sure is a very clear and visible conflict between christians, traditionalists and muslims like everywhere else in Nigeria.

He's not obligated to apologize, thou the more appropriate thing would be to. However, just because you don't find it provocative(like it isn't even about you sad ) doesn't mean the people it actually involves wouldn't- that's simple sense. I expect someone like Soyinka to not be this myopic.
By the way, watch as Soyinka, seen as the devil of recent by Obidients, suddenly becomes their hero.

Prof. Wole Soyinka has not seen the video yet. The issue in focus is the moral credential(or lack of) of those who were regarding the video as offensive. Prof is actually calling them hypocrites if their objection is because of dancing in front of a mosque. Shehu Sani's comment in particular must have drawn the attention of Prof. and he was clear that Sehu Sani had been silent on far more serious cases of persecution of others by muslims while Shehu never condemned those actions.

Prof may or may not still issue another comment after watching the video.
