Nobody told anyone.
It is just a coincidence based on residential planning.

Almost every residential accessible road in Nigeria has gutter which drains water from the residential houses and and on roads. Not only corn (roasted or boiled) is sold close to the gutter in Nigeria, almost all essential goods with no shop are sold close to gutter for easy accessibility by passing buyers.

I think the position themselves at the edge of the road for easy access to customers and the edge of the road is most often culvet/gutter area. And also since they don't have shops and it's like a mobile market.

Based on the Agbadorian Principle, corn must be sold on or around a gutter. Show me a corn seller comfortable enough to rent a shop and package corn selling properly to make a good profit margin and I'll show you who told them to always sell corn on or around a gutter. If you don't want gutter corn, just opt for pop-corn. Shikena.

You can say that again! The issue is that it's merely coincidental. On a lighter note, the gutter smell adds a sweet taste to the roasted or boiled delicacy. Try am! grin grin

What irritates me most is how they alllow several people who don't even have the intention to buy to touch the corn with their filthy hands in the name of checking it.

By the time you buy the corn, uncountable hands would have touched it, even the ones wey dey kolo for street.

the best place to roast corn is on the street, mostly by the road side. They can't roast corn inside a rented shop, because nobody will notice or patronize them and some sellers can't afford to rent a shop!!!
