In an exhilarating and closely-contested rematch of the 2019 World Cup final, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) and the Netherlands, both esteemed soccer powerhouses, played to a 1-1 draw at the 2023 Women’s World Cup held at the Wellington Regional Stadium.

The Fight

The match began with the fervent chants of "U-S-A, U-S-A!" echoing through the stadium as the USWNT faced the Netherlands in their second tournament match.

However, the jubilation soon waned as the Dutch secured an early lead in the 17th minute when midfielder Jill Roord found the back of the net past USWNT goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

This marked the first time since 2011 that the USWNT trailed in a Women’s World Cup match, breaking their impressive 17-match streak without trailing – a record in the tournament's history.

The Netherlands, eager for revenge following their 2-0 loss to the US in the 2019 World Cup, displayed exceptional tenacity.

Despite being behind at halftime, the USWNT displayed their dominance, outshooting the Netherlands 9-2 in the first half. Their efforts finally bore fruit in the 62nd minute, with US captain Lindsey Horan scoring the equalizer through a powerful header from a corner kick, igniting a frenzy of celebration in the stands.
