Anniversary Of The July 29th 1966 Coup by gidgiddy: 11:45am On Jul 28, 2023
In the 1960's, military coups were a common thing in Africa. Virtually every country in Africa went through coup(s) in the 60's and 70's. A few days ago, we had a coup in Niger Republic. Nigeria had two military coups in 1966, the first being January 15 1966, and the other on July 29th of the same year. Comparing both coups gives an insight how Nigerians reason

Ethnic tag

January 15 - Has since been tagged 'Igbo coup' by some people

July 29 - Still has no tag despite being led by Hausa-Fulani elements. Nobody calls it a 'Hausa/Fulani coup'

Casualty

January 15 - Led to the death of 20 people

July 29 - Led to death of over 300 people

Participants today

January 15 - All surviving participants such as Gbulie, Chukwuka, Ademoyega, Okafor, were jailed after the war and officially dismissed from the Nigerian Army

January 29 - Participants such as Mohammed, Babangida, Buhari, Abacha, Tarfa all recieved accelerated promotions and went on to hold important positions such as Presidents of Nigeria

Post casualty rate

January 15th - Zero casualties

July 29th - Over 30,000 people massacred, mainly from the Eastern Region

Coup leaders

January 15th - Led by Chukwuma Nzeogwu, an Igbo man from Okpanam in present day Delta State. Besides a statue erected in his community by his people, and a book written by former President Obasanjo, there are no public landmarks for the man

July 29th- Led by Murtala Mohammed, an Hausa man from Kano. He has had Airports, Highways, buildings and numerous landmarks named after him. He was even immortalised on the 20 Naira note.

Structural imbalance

January 15th - Led to the loss of democracy and the emergence of Ironsi as head of state, however Ironsi maintained boundaries of  the 4 Regions he met, and allowed them resource control

July 29th - Led to the continued loss of democracy and the emergence of Gowon, however Gowon used decree 14 to abolish the 4 Regions he inherited from Ironsi and create 12 states to replace them, and Decree 15 to remove resource control

January 29th 1966 coup was one of the bloodiest in Nigeria's history. To this day, the participants such Buhari, Babangida, Danjuma, Tarfa, are still political heavyweights in the country. The moral of the story is, the worse you you do in Nigeria, the better you are honoured

Because you guys won't stop talking, we will not stop responding.
Just saying 20 people died in the January 15th coup represent part of the arrogance and insensitivity of Igbos to the atrocity committed by their Officers.
I will request the OP to list the names of the 20 people that were murdered in the 15th January 1966 coup, he will do well by stating their position in our Nation as of then. He should also justified why Igbos hide their Leaders while killing the Leaders from other Regions. The way he casually called 20 is in itself very offending and insensitive of OP.
Aguyi Ironsi reluctance to punish the perpetrators of the January 15 coup confirms the conspiracy theory and led to the reprisal coup.

Did you just wrote that Ironsi maintain the regional system of government? Can you explain the details of Decree 4 and Unitary System of government introduced by Ironsi..
Also how come the East didn't record loss of eminent political leaders like other region during the coup of Jan 15 1966?
Also are you aware that the aftermath of the coup on 15/1/66 gave birth to nepotism that we are all suffering till date?

The first ever bloody Military coup in Nigeria on 15th January, 1966 was masterminded by mostly Igbo soldiers to seize power.. no matter how you plan to rewrite history, we the reasonable ones know Igbos planned the coup well for Aguiyi Ironsi (an Igbo) to become Head of State. Nzeogwu even admitted in one of the interviews he granted after the coup that killed Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa, Akintola and many others that Ironsi was his boss and that he was still very much under him.

Having studied Igbo behaviour myself for a while now, I realize they do things without first thinking of the repercussion and consequences. How on earth will you go on killing spree of leaders of other ethnic groups and expect them not to retaliate??
We saw how the whole thing went down and the killings upon killings that followed. The position they killed others for, they still didn't last there. Ironsi spent just 6 months as Head of State before the Northern soldiers killed him in a counter coup.

People who talk about Decree 34 are those who never read the Decree, otherwise, they would know it did not tamper with the boundaries of the Regions nor their resource control

The July 28th coup dud not touch anyone from the North, do you see anyone talking about that?

Well if it is about the killing of Igbos, that one had been going long before there was ever a coup

Igbos were massacred in Jos in 1945, and in Kano in 1953. It was not coup that Northerners were waiting for before going on killing spree

Can you explain how the Unitary system of Government introduced by Ironsi works?

Thats question is for those who told you that Ironsi introduced unitary system. The person who actually introduced unitary system is Gowon who abolished the 4 Regions he inherited from Ironsi with Decree 14 and created 12 'units' or states to replace them

The counter coup of July 28 - 31st 1966 and other subsequent Northern dominated and coordinated coups have only confirmed one thing, coup is only condemned if it was not carried out by your own people or region.

The first coup plotters in Nigerian history who were majorly Ironsi's kinsmen (Igbos) found it necessary to massacre all Nigerian leaders exempting their own leaders. Ironsi spared the life of the coup plotters.
Igbos celebrated. They mocked the northerners, despite the northerners losing a good amount of important men in a gruesome manner like the Sardauna of Sokoto Amhadu Bello.

Well that triggered a counter coup that got him executed, and the rest is history.
We remember.

Of course, you just posted the same lie that has been told about Ironsi rather than read decree 34 to know if it is true

If they call the first coup "Igbo coup", let them apply the same tact in calling the second coup "Hausa/Fulani coup"

Igbos have been trying to change the story of that coup since 1967 without success. Even a child that will be born in the north 100 years to come will know that Igbos killed Sardauna, the great grandson of Usman Dan Fodio.
