Your politicians and elite, regardless of their tribe, have no problems with it. They share your commonwealth, they are all friends with each other, their children date and marry each other, they are neighbors in the most expensive neighborhoods in Nigeria and abroad. So why do you have problems with it. Maybe its time to grow a brain.

You are a mumu , who is clever by half , even though the common looters are not from the same ethnic background , don't you know the diversity that exist among followers bring about ethnic sentiment and lack of cooperation to fight common enemies, who are the looters?

You are absolutely wrong ! It's not about language , infact far more than 50 % of the population speak Hausa in Niger republic , around 80% speak Hausa language, almost the entire population and they are not saying 80% of the population are Hausa people, social scientists are not dumb , the question is a function of origin and lineage through interrogation, genography , common heritage ; Niger a country that share boundaries with seven northern Nigerian states , where there are no barriers against human expansion (no imaginary boundaries can serve as barriers) ,.

The Hausa people are concentrated in the southern Niger because they form boundaries with northern Nigeria and are sitting on top of northern Nigeria on the map and it's the most fertile region of Niger.

While Tuareg are in the north a region of boundaries with north Africa , Tuareg are also found in North Africa; Zarma are in the region bordering Mali (north western), diffa Arabs (north Eastern Niger) , Kanuri are in the South East of Niger republic while the same Kanuri is in the north east of Nigeria, this is so because south east Niger and northeast Nigeria are adjacent each other , so there is an overflow of this tribe;

So for Hausa people the more the boundaries connect , between northern Nigeria and Southern Niger , the more the overflow or expansion to and fro or in and out , afterall 50% of 25 million people in niger is just about 13 million Hausa people in niger while about 25 % of Hausa in Nigeria is 25 million Hausa in Nigeria.

So what's the big deal or surprise in 13 million of Hausa in NIGER republic?

Appreciate the mention and delineation - particularly the spatial distribution of major ethnicities.

@shortgun, do you have a rebuttal? This synopsis is well reasoned and persuasive.

The Banzoum guy is a minority Shuwa Arab and probably the major reason he was overthrown,
and the probably the reason why most Nigeriens are in support of the coup or just totally ambivalent. All that talk about economic and security issues by the coupists is a bunch of hogwash to mask the purely ethnic reasons for the coup.

Imagine the Bazoum guy is the first Diffa Arab to be the president of the country, he belongs to a tribe that is just about 2% of the population, and they have always been marginalized, they have in the past been fought and claimed that diffa Arabs are more of Sudanese and Chadian; and now they kicked his ass out.

No one is arguing the atrocities committed by the colonialists in Africa...But same time we play to be too myopic and ignorant about the ones committed by our own people on us as a people....
yinkkus:

That's the truth when two Geographical entities are sharing borders, it's no surprise that you will find the two states/countries/geographical entities having common ethnic groups;

But the Colonialists went overboard, they were not circumspect in their partitioning ,they just carved out regions or divided regions among themselves for their economic advantage with no recourse to their ethnic identities.

It's not accurate to say hausas make up the majority of the population in nigeria. In fact no tribe alone is the majority in nigeria as no single tribe is up to 30 percent of the entire population .Also,fulani numbers are exaggerated for obvious reasons .

It doesn't matter, even if they are not up to 30% , as long as their percentage is not matched by any other tribe, they form the majority.

Majority percentage is not a new thing in any demography.

I understand the shortcomings internal and external , and I won't be part of myopism and ignorance of the bad acts committed by the looters within.

Fulani are just about 8% of the Nigerian population , where is the exaggeration?

The Europeans partitioned Africa in the most dumb way possible. Togo was unjustly divided into two, French and British mandates. The French mandate was granted independence in 1960 while the British Togo mandate was merged with Ghana, the volta region.

Looking at Nigeria, southern Nigeria have nothing in common with northern Nigeria. The North could've been just another francophone country like Niger Republic, Chad, Benin Republic or CAR.

It's unfortunate we're stock together in this unequal strange bed fellow affair.

That's another interesting take on the ethnicity issue. Shuwa Arabs are also found in Borno and Yobe States and they migrated originally a few centuries back from Sudan to modern-day Nigeria and Niger.

A.K.A Diffa Arabs in Niger republic, Bazoum the first Diffa/Shuwa Arab to become the president of Niger, they have been fought and marginalized in the past and they extended such act till they kick out Diffa Arab again.

You're wrong here. It was the former President Buhari himself that called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene urgently in the military coup situation as the Chairman of ECOWAS. It was widely reported in the news and even posted here on NL.You can do some Googling to confirm this.

However, will Buhari a Fulani (whose father is from Niger Republic, and his (Buhari's) mother a Hausa woman has a Kanuri mother) be happy to support a full invasion of Niger by a special ECOWAS military force the way Tinubu played a diplomat role in removing the Gambian former military leader Yahya Jammeh from office with Nigerian fighter jets and boots on Gambian soil remains to be seen.

Read your message again, "The way Tinubu played a diplomatic role in removing Yahya janmeh" perhaps you meant Obasanjo .

The person you quoted did not mention the ethnic compositions of the seven northern Nigerian states sharing border with Niger republic.
Yobe State for example share boundary with Niger republic and the largest ethnic group in Yobe State are Fulanis followed by the Karai-karai.
The kanuris are the largest ethnic group in Borno State and not the Hausas.
The poster created the impression that Hausas are the largest ethnic group in all the seven northern states sharing boundaries with Niger republic to conclude that Hausas must be the largest ethnic group in Niger republic.
There's no way data gathered on the basis of assumptions can be accurate.
