The only thing that can stop police from extorting motorist is to actually stop them from asking for vehicle papers.

If there is stop and search, make sure it's stop and search and not stop and ask for papers.

That should be the work of road police like vio, road safety etc.

Or just cancel those and let regular police do the work.

I detest the Nigerian Police Force and their lack of professional discipline.

But while we're all coming down heavy on their personnel, it is instructive for us all to admit that the Police is understaffed and grossly underpaid.

The welfare of an average Nigerian policeman in an entire month is shamefully less than what a street hawker selling soft drinks in Abuja traffic congestion makes as profits within the same timeframe. You cannot take a man with a wife and three kids, hang a heavy AK47 on his shoulder and put him in the sun for approximately 25 days of the month, only to send him home with a miserable 60 thousand naira (approximately 70 dollars) at the end of the month and not expect him to contemplate dubious practices the next day.

The Federal Government has to do better with the welfare of Policemen. These people expose their lives to untold societal dangers just so we all can sleep at nights. The least the Government can do is pay them adequately and treat them better.

Sadly, in our country, leaders administer panadol for headache instead of providing antibiotics to treat the malaria causing the aches..

I'm sure they can kiss their jobs good bye, though I wonder why many of them never learn, given the Police stand against issues like this, and how they've experienced their colleagues getting dismissed because of this oppressive and criminal act, many still continue believing they are bigger than God.

Successive governments at the center have failed to do anything about the corruption and extortionism in everyday Nigerian life.

It is as if we have accepted it as a way of life - a culture.

I told someone the other day that Nigeria saying we want to fight corruption may be a waste of time. Rather, we should be looking for ways to manage the corruption.
