The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), has inducted 236 graduating students of the Faculty of Education, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, into the teaching profession.

TRCN is empowered by law to regulate the teaching profession in Nigeria in order to promote competence and professionalism, and thereby curtail quackery.

The induction and oath-taking ceremony was the first of its kind in the history of the 12-year old university.

While speaking at the august event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sunday Elom commended the efforts of the Faculty Dean in ensuring that the professional body was in the university to usher-in the graduating students into the noble profession of teaching, which according to him, helps the inductees to be at abreast with new techniques and innovation in the field of education.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Romanus Ejiaga noted that the efficiency and commitment of teachers are paramount in human development, and urged the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria to give priority attention to teachers’ training.

He further charged the newly inducted professional educationists to give back to society after being properly groomed and nurtured by the university for four years, urging them to also perform diligently wherever they find themselves in the future so as to continue to uphold the image of the institution.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Ag. Dean, Faculty of education, Dr. Fransisca Ogba congratulated the inductees, stating they were privileged to be the first set of graduating students to be inducted into the teaching profession in the Faculty.

While noting that the teaching profession is noble, though challenging, she called on the inductees to make a difference in their respective disciplines.

She also admonished them to be guided by the university’s motto of “excellence and integrity” in practicing their profession .

The Registrar/Chief Executive, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Prof. Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye who was represented by the Head of Induction/internship, Mr. Femi Adebayo, while making his remarks thanked the University for providing a nurtured and stimulated environment for the development of the future educators.

He appreciated the Dean of the Faculty in particular for her commitment and dedication towards ensuring that the Faculty of Education becomes the best in AE-FUNAI.

Continuing, he said that education is a powerful tool for breaking down barriers, promoting understanding among individuals from different backgrounds, and creating a safe and nice future for people, regardless of their race, gender, status or ability.

Speaking further, Prof. Ajiboye added that every student deserves an equal opportunity to learn and grow for the future, and cautioned the inductees against breaching the laws guiding their profession especially their professional oath.

He equally noted that TRCN plays important role in the country, especially in bringing out the best in teachers, and highlighted some of the challenges facing teachers into include mental, emotional, and physical challenges.

He therefore called on government and school’s authorities to ensure the provision of proper educational materials and adequately equipped Counseling Centers to improve efficiency in the course of learning.

In her lecture titled “Grooming Professionally through Reflective Teaching”, Prof. Rosemary Igbo stressed the importance of a professional teacher and what a professional teacher needs to know to teach her students better.

She emphasized on the need for mentorship to grow in the teaching profession, and noted that teachers are trained to be confidential so that students can trust them.

She also stated that teaching job does not end in classroom but needs constant and consistent learning to get the desired goal.

She maintained that teachers’ best resources are their fellow teachers and advised on constant interaction among them. While also remarking that the new inductees should incorporate writing into the classroom regardless of the subject they plan to teach.

The highlight of the event was presentation of certificates to the new teachers and cultural dance by the students of the faculty.
