Originated from igboland

Funny question

Where did yam originate from?
Good question, I think the first Igbo tribesmen who migrated to west Africa came with yam tubers and decided to plant the head to continue cultivating the crop.

Do you know the name of this fruit?

In Igbo it is called ugiri and the seed is what is used to make ogbono soup you enjoy.

You can eat the back just like apple the the seed is dried and blended for ogbono soup.

Is God not wonderful?
OP, this is the fake Ogbono. The one u can eat the body is not the real ogbono. This is Egili in Kogi East and Ogbono is different. You don't eat the flesh.

I like ogbono die. But I don't like the fact that a cup of ogbono is three times costlier than a cup of egusi. So most times I just change my mind and go for egusi or even okro sef, but whenever money plenty for pocket I just go for ogbono.

This ogbono is useless in my place. We don't eat it.

I like the fruit a lot. We usually peel the skin with knife and enjoy the fruit and throw the seed away.

If the fruit is too much on the ground, you will see bees all over the place.

Op, where can one get the fruit?

Inside thick bush. It has season. It bears its fruits during the raining season. You will find the tree. The tree is usually very tall and big.

Irvingia gabonensis commonly called Bush mango

Dika nut (English)

Ugiri (Igbo)

Oro (Yoruba)
Ugiri is called Egili in Kogi East and it is different from Ă’ro where the real Ogbono comes from.

Notable difference is that one has edible flesh and the other is not. My grandma has them on the her farm and till date, my mum goes to pick them.
Ugiri (Egili) is not the same as Ogbono though they are similar. When you go to the market, ask Ogbono sellers, they will tell you the difference. Here where I live, the Ugili half cup goes for 300 to 400 while the Ogbono goes for 500 to 600 for the same quantity.

The original ogbono does not come from this.

In Benue this Ogbono is a lower grade one.

The fruit that produces original ogbono - The outer flesh is not edible

What are you saying? Ogbono outer flesh is edible. Go and verify. It's just like mango. Just that mango is sweeter.

Op this is not true.
Ugiri fruit is completely different from the tree that bears the fruit whose seeds are ogbono. In fact, though they look alike, the flesh of the ogbono fruit is not edible unlike the flesh of the ugiri fruit.

Op instead of you to post pictures of the tree so that those who don't know how it looks will know. The tree is very gigantically tall and the fruits can only be gotten when they fall from the tree
Here you have it.

It is not tribalism but enlightenment.
Nobody can lay claims on natural occuring things that could have germinated there by dispersion. I won't be surprised if this fruit has it origin outside africa.
You only confirmed my point... check my other comment.

I am in Abuja
Re: See Where Ogbono Comes From by Danielli70(m): 5:03pm On Aug 25, 2023
It's mostly called bush mango in English, it's actually bitter.
After drying the seed, you break it and get the wonderful ogbono inside.
You actually can't compare ogbono with okra.

You have answered the question perfectly

Ugiri seed is called OGBONO

WHEN UGIRI SEED IS PREPARED IT IS KNOWN AS OGBONO SOUP

Average Nigerian is a glutton. Go to any buka joint and see how men devour swallow using all their five fingers including palm to cut out a very big morsel while squeezing it repeatedly, then divide it to smaller portions, all being held within their palms while they take them in in turns, omoor, that thing irritates me.
is there any part of dis world where they don't eat?

except the lower grade one which is called "ujuru"
The real ogbono...the outer flesh is not consumable

Bush mango( ugiri) and Ogbono are two different plants. The Ogbono tree is called Adu and the flesh not edible like Ugiri. Also, the Ogbono seed draws much better than the ugiri seed which can leave your soup watery if you are not careful. We have Adu in my mother's compound and i do know the difference between ugiri seed and Ogbono seed.
