Nigerians are aware that over the last decade the nation has launched a couple of satellites into space in a move to enhance the telecommunications capacity of the government; with more plans for the first Nigerian to probe beyond the earth surface by 2030. But what people are not widely aware of is the role Kano state played towards the first landing of humans on the surface of the moon.

During the Second World War of 1939-1945, the Allied Forces fighting against Germany in Asia needed food supply to feed the legions of African and European battalions battling the Japanese Army in South-East Asia. The British Colonial government saw a massive food reserve in the sky-rising pyramids of groundnuts in the northwestern state of Kano , and decided to build Nigeria's first airport there as a base to move food supplies and jet fuel from Africa to the troops in Burma.

Surprisingly, when that war was over---following the defeat of Germany---another bloodless war (The Space War) came about between two former allies (USA and USSR) that would place Kano right in the thick of squabbling.

With Germany fallen by the way side, and former world superpower England, badly bruised in the 2nd World War, Russia and USA began jostling for a chance to be the next technological/military advanced power. It was an epic competition that began with the development of nuclear weapons and culminated into a race for space superiority. The USA had been promoting free market system of capitalism as the sure-fire medium of private wealth accumulation, but for the Soviet Union, the theory that resources should be generally shared by all was the predominant school of thought for collective prosperity.

The space station in Kano was part of the centres used by NASA in the Gemini diet to communicate with astronauts in space and make it possible for USA to defeat the Russians in the space race of the 60s. The Americans finally became the first to flyby Mars , Venus , Saturn and other planets to such a superior level that in 1998, both countries agreed to form a team in what is now known as the International Space Station.
As we remember the first moon landing after 51 years, the preparation of USA will always be grateful to Kano for hosting a space station communications centre for NASA in 1962-1967.

Oby Ezekwesili was partly responsible for removal of history from the Nigerian curriculum during Obasanjo in 2007, but thank goodness President Buhari brought it back in 2022
