The new session is about to begin, and that means that children are heading back to school. At some point during the day, they will be on the road as they journey to and from school. As a parent or guardian, keeping them safe should always be top-of-mind.

Whether they ride the bus, walk, bike, or get dropped off by a caregiver, it is important to put plans in place to ensure their safety. These tips will help:

Talk With Your Child About Safety.

When it comes to safety, you mustn’t hold anything back from your children. Talk to them about their instincts and paying attention to funny feelings of fear.

Tell them what to do if they don’t feel safe on their way to and from school, and even while in the school. Provide them with a number to reach, if they ever get a chance to place a call while they are in fear of imminent danger.

Also, ensure that they know both primary and alternate routes, so they can easily take them if the need ever arises.

Don’t Forget Bus Safety

If your kids go to and from school via the bus, discuss bus safety with them. Ideally, you or another trusted person should accompany them to the bus stop for the first few times they make the trip. If you can, continue to drive by the bus stop occasionally to keep tabs on what’s going on there.

Ensure that they are at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive, and teach them the “SAFE” principle:

Stay five steps away from the curb.

Always wait for the bus to completely stop before boarding the bus

Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.

Exit the bus after it stops and looks left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.
