Three officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and two from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have been detained by the Imo Police Command for allegedly intimidating and extorting residents of the state.

A 37-year-old Police Inspector was also detained for the same offense.

In Owerri on Tuesday, ASP Henry Okoye, the command's spokesperson, informed reporters of this.

He claimed that the suspects were well known for utilizing Point of Sale (POS) devices to extort unwary citizens, particularly young people in Owerri.

"These are security agents operating in Imo under the cover of Operation Search and Flush, harassing and extorting the populace, especially the youth, for thousands of Naira.

"They use POS, seize and check the victims' phones, causing them untold hardship," he continued.

Okoye gave the public assurances that swift action would be taken to wrap up the investigation and prosecute the culprits.

Arresting these criminals and publishing their faces in the public is the right step towards restoring peace in the East. I hope military men are not involved in the extortionist ideology.
