Journalists were on Wednesday denied access into the court premises where the Kano State Governorship Election Tribunal is set to deliver judgement on a petition filed before it by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate in the March 18 poll.

.ng recalls that the governorship candidate of APC in the Kano election, Nasir Gawuna, had approached the court to challenge the victory of Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People Party, NNPP, who was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The court is set to deliver judgment on the petition filed by the APC and its candidate today.

However, some reporters who stormed the venue to monitor the proceeding were denied access to the premises.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Usaini Muhammed Gumel, who spoke with newsmen, said the court only permitted 50 people.

According to him, “Since yesterday, we called the tribunal Secretary to hear arrangements for the sitting, where they informed us that only 50 people would be allowed in.

“The number includes the judges, lawyers of the two parties and their members, journalists and the media. So it is not the police that limited the number.”

This situation at the Kano State Governorship Election Tribunal is quite concerning. Access to court proceedings is a fundamental aspect of transparency and accountability in our democratic system. While it's understandable that there may be limitations on the number of people allowed in the courtroom due to space constraints and COVID-19 safety measures, it's crucial that journalists are given the opportunity to report on such significant events.

Journalists play a vital role in ensuring that the public has access to accurate and unbiased information about legal proceedings and election-related matters. Their presence helps in upholding the principles of open justice and accountability.

It's good to hear that the limitation on the number of people allowed inside the courtroom was not solely imposed by the police but rather a decision made by the tribunal itself. However, it's important that such decisions are made with careful consideration for the role of the media in a democratic society.

In the interest of transparency and public trust, I hope that

They did not allow the media to cover the Presidential election tribunal

In their final ruling they said it would be televised live, but they only played a tape while no one saw who was delivering judgement

Now this... shocked shocked shocked

Which Covid-19 safety measures😂?

The judges are delivering this judgement via Zoom. They're not in the courtroom. That's to tell you something sinister is afoot and the judges have opted to play it safe by considering their own safety first. Don't forget this is the same Kano State where a Commissioner came out to outrightly threaten the judges about consequences should they give nonsensical rulings.

Why preventing journalists from the trial venue? What is cooking again in Kano? Perhaps they want to do the kind of PEPT judgement wuruwuru where for the first time judges delivered judgement with their faces off the camera.

calm down boy, one was a Nigerian, stayed in Nigeria to fight the corrupt leaders. The other claimed to be Jew, manipulated innocent ndigbos to burn down multimillion properties, to kill Nigerian military and paramilitary officers. In fact, if you use your sense well, you'd not even dare to mention the two in the same sentence.
