When you think of the 1980s and 1990s, a wave of nostalgia probably washes over you, taking you back to the classic television shows, childhood games, and the timeless music of legends like Fela, King Sunny Ade, Funmi Adams, Orits Wiliki, and others. But amidst these cherished memories, one aspect of that era often forgotten is the iconic cars that used to grace the roads of Nigeria. We’ll take a trip down memory lane and revisit the top ten best old cars from the 1980s and 1990s that once made you a “big man” if you owned one. 1. Volkswagen Beetle The Volkswagen Beetle was one of the first cars to roll onto Nigerian roads, and its unmistakable, rounded shape earned it the endearing nickname “Tortoise car.” In those days, owning a Beetle was a symbol of affluence, but today, many of these once-beloved cars are parked in garages, gathering dust, hosting rats, and accommodating insects. 2. Peugeot 504 The Peugeot 504 was a true Nigerian classic. It quickly became the standard car and was a ubiquitous sight on Nigerian streets. If you didn’t drive a Peugeot 504, you were considered a “JJC” (Johnny Just Come), especially if you worked for the government. Pop c drove all..he actually had all these in his 30s all brand new. One thing about pop c was that he never bought fairly used. Same with a lot of hard working Nigerians in the 70s 80s and early 90s but u see this generation our present economy makes it almost impossible to buy brand new cars..see ppl shipping in tokunbo and smiling saying e sharp....this country don finish..many old ppl left flourishing careers in US.. UK...Germany...Netherlands to come back home cos they believed in nigeria. 1 Like |
