Lol watin concern custom with parrot bird, I don’t think the customs is empowered to do this bird that can fly from Nigeria to South Africa by it self
South Africa is close now.we have history of these birds leaving Nigeria for united kingdom. A case in point is hawk leaving unibadan zoological garden for London zoo. This was later discovered through the label on the bird.ln all, they were sent back to Nigeria. The earth belongs to God and the fullness thereof, just as men migrate from place to place,l think animals should not be denied access to other world .There are people who have never set their eyes on parrot before.

The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, has intercepted live endangered species of African Grey Parrots, Green Parrots and a hawk with a combined value of about N6,859,832.

Comptroller Timi Bomodi, Customs Area Controller, made this known on Wednesday.

According to him, the seizure was based on credible intelligence.

The animals were intercepted at the Gbaji checkpoint en route Benin Republic.

He said, “These animals were intercepted by our officers at about 4 am today; we got the intelligence that they were being conveyed in a luxurious bus all the way from Kaduna to Lagos, with the intention to take them out of the country to sell.

“As you may be aware, this is an illicit trade of endangered species, they are valued outside the country and we have individuals that are ready to go through a lot of risks to smuggle these birds.”

Bomodi restated the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to curb the menace of illicit trade in the country while also noting that two suspects were arrested in connection with the seizure.

“Part of the responsibilities of the Nigeria Customs Service as a signatory to the convention on illicit trade in endangered species is to ensure trade like this does not continue and we are hell-bent on seeing that things of this nature are not circulated.

“We already have two suspects in our custody, and the normal procedure for activating seizures of this nature with special regard to how these defendants will be treated is already in place”, he emphasized.

The seized animals were handed over to the Controller, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services, Sanusi Magashi.

The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Services will temporarily safeguard and nurture the animals before releasing them to the national park.

@bolded

...before releasing them to the national park where their feeding and veterinary allocation will be embezzled by human beings and they will finally die off. If those animals have a clue of what fate holds for them in the hands of those greedy customs officers, they will just look for a quick way of escape back to the wild.

Hunger and illiteracy wrapped up in disgraceful ignorance have done irreparable damages to some Nigerians. Anything passing through our borders falls within the purview of the Nigerian customs. Shame dey catch me for the comments here.

Bushmeat can never be this expensive.

Young man, they weren't selling them for consumption, but as pet.

Secondly, bushmeat are more expensive than the regular meat you buy from the market.

You think these birds were meant to be sold inside Africa?
I can confidently tell you that a big dealer could sell a single one of those birds for over ₦5m to a wealthy collector who makes such thing his hobby.

You've stayed in Naija for too long.
A falcon got sold in Abu Dhabi for over 110k dirham in Feb of this year. In today's exchange rate, that is over ₦30m.

You're joking right?
You don't think NCS is empowered to check and inspect goods that are being shipped legally or illegally out of the country?

Na wah o!

Birds can fly anywhere by itself, yes. But will it fly to South Africa by itself when it is locked in a cage?

This is becoming a very dangerous trend. People don't know that Nigeria has overtaken east African countries as the epicentre of illicit trade in endangered species.
