70,000 Hectares Dry Season Wheat Farming Begins November – FG by Paraman: 7:38pm On Oct 07, 2023
The Federal Government, on Friday, announced that it would commence the dry season cultivation of wheat on over 70,000 hectares of land beginning from November.

It said an expected yield of 875,000 metric tonnes would be derived from the dry season wheat farming, as this would be stored in the country’s food reserves.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, disclosed this at a briefing in Abuja that focused on the way forward for agriculture in Nigeria.

Outlining the immediate priority actions that would be ongoing till the end of 2023, he said, “Implementation of the dry season wheat production is starting in November 2023 as part of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro Pocket projects funded by the African Development Bank.

“Under this scheme, the target is to produce wheat on over 70, 000 hectares across the wheat production zone of the country, with an expected yield of 875,000 metric tonnes for our food reserves;

“Blending of appropriate fertilisers to support this year’s dry season farming while making provisions for next year farming season well in advance; providing train-the-trainer for extension agents involved in dry season farming in collaboration with wheat producing states and other partners such as flour mills.”

Dry season farming is what i will encourage states like Benue, Kogi, Taraba and other state that have rivers or states along the coastal areas should get involve in.

States in the North are doing great and making alot of money from dry season/irrigation farming. I know of a friend from Adamawa who makes hundreds of thousands from dry season farming.

They will just sit somewhere like they have been doing all these centuries without results & release useless lies & propaganda without providing any evidence to the fact that 70,000 hectares wheat has been planted with an output of over 800,000 hectares metric tonnes of harvest.Mr Minister where is the feasibiliy Study of this project

Simple ways to know that this press release are dished with lies & uncertainty, without an action plan. It involves asking very simple questions ..

..what is the cost of the 70,000 hectares wheat to be planted
...where will the wheat to be planted come from...are they already available to be planted ?...is it a high or low breed grain ?

...In which States will the farmlands hectares be available for this project?.. & what is the security situation in those areas ? Will Additional security be provided in those States, if those chosen states are experiencing insecurity ? No Information was given during the useless press release.

What is the total amount of Loans that was provided by the Afrcan Development Bank for this project ? why is it not stated if you are to be taken serious ( it is not stated because of the usual age long cancer : CORRUPTION. When the amount is not known, it is very easy to loot). How much will be realised from the project ? There are So many questions still to be asked that will show that the statement from the Minister is just what it is.. a press statement

No useful Information was provided..the usual press release of calling low & high numbers & going to do no work while expecting the press release to do the magic of planting & harvestibg over 800, 000 hectares metric tonnes of wheat for the hungry Nigeria masses

Isokotolopia:
great , food security is paramount

Food and Energy security is paramount and an economic necessity.

Zimbabwe was able to increase it wheat yield and meet food self-sufficiency. I doubt 70,000 is enough. Zimbabwe was able to produce a yield of 375,000 tons from 80,000 hectares of land, using imported machinery from Belarus.

Zimbabwe set for another record wheat yield, bringing back the dream of self-sufficiency
With the war in Ukraine as a wake-up call, the African country has decided to focus more on its own production and less on imports. But bigger harvests will not by themselves solve the problem of food insecurity.

Last year, we were able to grow 150 hectares full of wheat,” says Zinyemba with a satisfied smile on his face. “That’s a very good harvest.”

Although the Zimbabwean winter has just begun, another record wheat harvest is expected this year after farmers in the Southern African country planted wheat crops on 86,000 hectares of land, compared to 80,000 hectares last year. By planting so many wheat crops before the planting deadline of June 15, the nation is hoping to produce 420,000 tons of the cereal - much more than the record yield of 375,000 tons that was achieved last year.

The surplus of last year and the prospect for an even larger surplus this year has allowed Zimbabwe to openly dream of food self-sufficiency again. Additionally, last year’s saved $300 million in wheat imports became part of Zimbabwe’s gross domestic product, rather than disappearing abroad, notes Agriculture Ministry Permanent Secretary John Basera.

“We owe our record harvest to our collaboration with the private sector,” says John Basera, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture. He sees that companies and investors, at the initiative of the government, have invested on a large scale in joint ventures. They not only do this to earn money, says Basera, “but certainly also to guarantee food security in our country”. The joint ventures between the business community and the agricultural sector are now bearing fruit for the first time, says Basera, who refers to the historic wheat surplus.
