Kind of funny to see how people are complaining about bad governance, under an article where the government is considering something that most people want...a subsidy on gas so that power prices stay low. Even then, I kind of agree with them, but not for the same reasons. Personally, this is a bad one from the Tinubu government. If they want power to run well, they have to free the gencos and discos to SET THEIR PRICES, and by extension allow them to EARN a large enough profit to pay for and cover for any raise in gas prices. Because the more prices rise, the more subsidy costs rise....and the more the need to take more money from our budget...and thence to cover the deficit...more loans. Anyway, Nigerians like cheap things. That's how we lost 4 working refineries, and why we never had 24 hour power supply. (If Obasanjo had not forcefully let the GSM companies set their price to some extent...yes there is a ceiling, but they got more leeway...we would still be using 1g internet. . Maybe dial up self. ) This subsidy is a Greek gift, and as some wise old person once said...I fear the greeks when they bring gifts. (Trojan horse anyone?) 1 Like |

Pakute: PDP did not 'rotten the refineries' Nigerians did that by demanding for cheap fuel, aided and abbeted by governments since 1973...who listened and gave them cheap fuel in the name of subsidy. By 1994, the refineries were already collapsing. PDP was not in power then. Both PDP and APC had a choice. DO A TOTAL REMOVAL OF SUBSIDY, and there would have been lots of refineries springing up. But instead, your PDP and APC leaders did partial removal, pretended it was full removal, and as a result, refineries operated at a loss, subsidy money fuelled corrupt and sabotage behaviour, till they collapsed. Unitl you and your PDP friends are ready to accept that fuel should be costing above N800-1000 today per lter, you are not ready for working refineries. And your beloved leader has brought back the same drug that killed the refineries in the first place. Subsidy. |

dre11:it seems these foreign entities want to run nigeria aground something they would never do in their country. Nigeria needs a revolution. People who are waiting for refinery have you seen that it would not solve our problem. Imagine gas excess in our being priced in dollars just because foreign entities who extract it pay dollars to do so. We need to nationalize our resources. |

Beremx:it would take a long time to address that. The short term measure is to look for dollars and subsidize it. However, we need a total overhaul of the system. We need to build local technology that would enable us extract this gas nairally and sell in naira. This would bring down the price but as far as we are using dollar forget it. The same will happen for refineries. 1 Like |

Pakute:Knowing this moniker, I was going to ignore since everyone knows you're one of zombie accts but just to clear the air, I'll have you know that ALL the 18 gas power plants in Nigeria were built in the 16 years of PDP while APC is yet to build just one in 8 years. While you can fault Jonathan's govt for how is privatised the distribution aspect of our power sector, you should also be aware that the Disco license were renewed by Buhari govt in 2019 when they could have simply revoked them as the law stipulates after five years. Refineries were already moribund by the time PDP took over but it was APC who promised to build a refinery every year. Where are the refineries? APC is a failure in all ramifications 1 Like |
