YIAGA to INEC, NASS: Emulate Liberia, include Candidates photos on ballot papers by fergie001: 9:32am On Oct 18, 2023
This was contained in a preliminary finding of the 2023 Election Study and Observation Mission (ESOM) to the October 10 Liberia 2023 General Election deployed by Yiaga Africa from October 7-13.

The delegation was led by a former Commissioner for Political Affairs at the African Union Commission and former Nigerian Ambassador to Guinea, Aisha Abdullahi.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NIGERIA
1. Political stakeholders should demonstrate a firm commitment to democracy and nation-building by upholding national values such as patriotism, integrity and public interest in electoral politics.

2. INEC should review the format of ballot papers used in Nigeria elections to include photographs and names of candidates to improve the quality of electoral preferences and reduce invalidated votes.

3. INEC should undertake a comprehensive audit of the voter register to eliminate duplications, multiple registrants and ineligible voters to improve the integrity of the voter register. The audit process should be subjected to an independent citizen review to engender public trust.

4. INEC and state electoral commissions should commit to greater transparency in election administration through proactive disclosure of election information and consistent application of election rules and guidelines.

5. The National Assembly and INEC should amend the electoral legal framework (Electoral Act and INEC Guidelines) to introduce early voting to allow eligible voters on essential election duties, such as security personnel, INEC staff, election observers, journalists, etc., to vote at elections.

6. The National Assembly should review the Electoral Act to address the ambiguities in the results collation and transmission process and the role of technology in the results management value chain.

7. The National Assembly should strengthen the electoral law to make electronic transmission of results mandatory, including the upload of polling unit-level results and results sheets used at different levels of results collation.

Signed

Dr. Aisha Abdullahi
Chair, ESOM Delegation to Liberia

Samson Itodo
Executive Director, Yiaga Africa

Terrible comparison.
Liberia has only about 5,800 polling units in the entire country. With less than 3million registered voters and total land size of about Niger State.
The comparison doesn't make sense.
Nigerians always looking for ways to bring down their Country. The Liberia election is smaller than some State Election

Observation seconded.
Ohislee:
Additional information like photos and names of candidates on ballot papers shouldn't be a big deal. This would increase the transparency of the voting process. However trust Nigerian politicians, they are interested in things that creates loopholes for rigging.

Wittyness

I didn't read the news but what from the headline... The demand is not too much. Nigeria can afford to add the photo of a candidate running for an elective office in the country. It's not too much to do.

Maybe you haven’t noticed but Nigeria has been left behind.

Kenya for instance has better public institutions than Nigeria.

Nigeria got just 3 votes in its bid to join United Unions Human Right Council.

South Africa is projected to over take Nigeria as the biggest economy in Africa while having less than 1/3 of our population.

include pictures of candidates on ballots. You people are the country main problem. When there's call for people in Authority to do the right thing, uNa useless opinion because of political affiliation will be dragging issues. Just telling people to do the right thing period.

The only option is to make Abure the INEC chairman!

If not that then another Igbo man appointed by Obi!

That's all!

.................................

Liberia is about one-nineth of Nigeria!
Seems they are marginally rejecting the 57 year old Weah and voting the 78 year old Boakai!

Na manual voting Liberia dey do o!
No e-voting!

Who cares? Even APC members don't trust INEC anymore. Unless a total overhaul, next elections will be affected by huge voters aparty. E-voting is the way

Get sense. It is not a comparison but a submission. Irrespective of size, it can be adopted. Nigerians are perishing because our info system is obscure

Is it rocket science to copy and paste a candidate picture in the ballot paper before mass production, something that can be done in a business center even without knowledge of Corel Draw.
You are actually the one belittling Nigeria, that's why politicians campaign annually with giving you electricity and access roads since you were born to vote for them angry

I voted during the last election, it was already very confusing with the endless numbers of political parties with only their logo, including pictures again will certainly become more cumbersome. Each country has its own peculiarity that must be followed, Aside, our electoral system believes votes are for Political parties and not individual.

U guys always giving useless excuses!
The amount spent on National assembly members alone is mind blowing!
Why cant we Nigerians tell our selves the truth and enact stuff that can help better our elections?
Why?
If Nigeria is too big, why not break up the country? What is the need of having something big that u cant manage? Is it by force to be large country?
If u must have a large country, then ensure u can sustain it!
Our election need photos of the people contesting, their names, we need strict and complete adherance to electronic transmission of results!
We need results uploaded live and Nigerians can track and verify these results live and direct!
We need to reduce the power of the INEC chairman! Can we for once as a country do the right thing?
When una go stop dey support rubbish becus of either politicians pay u or ur tribe person is in power?
This is why I can never work for any politician becus it would deny me the right senses!
Thank god for tech, we are free from all these rubbish
