AGUIYI-IRONSI Decree 34 Abolishing Regionalism Sets Nigeria Back For 100 Years - by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 9:30pm On Oct 21, 2023
THE self styled #TableShaker, Reno Omokri took a swipe at former Head of State, Major-General Aguiyi Ironsi for enacting Decree 34 abolishing Regions in Nigeria.

Omokri who wrote the statement in his X handle monitored by SOJ WORLDWIDE, said the Decree set Nigeria back by 100 years.

He praised the laudable programs of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he added that but for Aguiyi-Ironsi, Western Region would have been better than Dubai.

"If Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi had not abolished regionalism and resource control on May 24, 1966, with his Decree Number 34, the Western Region of Nigeria would have been better than Dubai today. That act set back Nigeria perhaps 100 years backwards, and we have not recovered from it until today.

Even with Awolowo in prison since 1963, the Western Region was on automatic pilot and still outperformed every other region by 1966, when Ironsi ended regionalism, because of his policies, especially his Universal Free Primary Education, which was compulsory and non-discriminatory. It included free school feeding to all children in the Western Region, no matter where their parents came from.

The Awolowo Western Region government introduced university scholarships that were higher in award amount than the federal scholarships. Awolowo's scholarship not only paid your school fees, whether in Nigeria or abroad, but your parents were paid a stipend during the pendency of your scholarship.

Long before Barack Obama achieved the Affordable Care Act (ACA), on March 23, 2010, Chief Awolowo had universal health coverage in the Western Region of Nigeria for every child and persons under eighteen, irrespective of whether or not their parents were from the Western Region. He did this by establishing at least one hospital in every administrative division in the Western Region.

The Western Region also had the first television station in Africa, the Western Nigeria Television Service, to keep citizens informed, educated and entertained.

Chief Awolowo established the Western Nigerian Development Corporation, which helped Westerners establish businesses and turned present-day Imeja into the most industrialised part of Nigeria to date.

He set up the cooperative that ensured that as long as you were a farmer in the Western Region, the government would buy your produce as a last resort if you could not sell it.

Explaining why he committed himself to these policies, Chief Awolowo, on September 3, 1959, said:

"To educate the child is to lay the solid foundation for future social and economic progress: to provide health services is to combat diseases which are wasting on human resources and, therefore, reduce our productive potentialities.

The Government has, for these reasons, brought about the greatest social revolution in the history of Black Africa."

May God bless the memory, offspring, and lineage of Papa Obafemi Awolowo, forever and ever, in Yeshua's Name."

The only thing they have succeeded in doing is always moving country backwards

Ahmadu Bello and Awolowo wanted a divided Nigeria but the doctrine of one Nigeria was preached by Azikiwe and the slave aligned with his northern master to spite Awolowo. Imagine where we would be if we were separate countries

Next thing for a very flimsy reason, Nzeogwu the murderer killed leaders from the north, west and mid western region in a coup but spared his thieving tribesmen. Imagine where the regions would have been now if that coup never happened

Then this retrogressive coupist in Ironsi abolished the regions.

The only thing these people have to offer is nothing but retrogression.

Reno is right. The Western Region was a pacesetter in not just Nigeria but also Africa.

Azikiwe through his faulty discretion for whatever reasons ranging from greed, selfishness to clannishness prevented the only tool (Secession Clause in the Constitution) for check and balance that others with foresight wanted. All because he thought he could outsmart the Yorubas into leading their region or outdo the Northerners by playing second fiddle. He failed in both cases. After all, “charity begins at home” they say.

In similar fashion, another Igbo man, General Aguiyi Ironsi on assuming the position of Head of State promulgated decree 34 abolishing the regional system of government in spite of outright rejection of the policy from other regions especially the North. The North thereafter expedited their revenge on the first coup plotters and its beneficiaries (especially General Aguiyi Ironsi), and have continued to use the system created by Ironsi to their advantage. Who is to blame?

The lack of (1. accountability and (2. emotional intelligence by those Igbo leaders got us to where Nigeria is today: calling for restructuring and resource control. This also led to an avoidable civil war, since the Eastern Region could have seceded peacefully when it declared secession from Nigeria.

The worst hit by these twin misadventures by these Igbo leaders is the Western Region that had the edge having been led by a visionary (Awolowo) who ensured accountability, free education, free healthcare and rapid development, all of which were cut short/destroyed.

The main reason Igbos troop into South West is to enjoy Yoruba style of governance and opportunities created by Yoruba people.. they enjoyed Awo's free education policy even when the visionless leaders in their region mocked Awolowo.

Pa. Obafemi Awolowo was indeed a bright scholar with exemplary leadership qualities.. how I wish younger generation Yorubas can emulate him and stop placing too much value on paper money. Build your human capital and the world will be at your feet.

Today they are crying blue murder when it's a known fact that their forefathers destroyed Nigeria out of greed to dominate all other ethnicities.

The shameless Zik couldn't do jack when Federal forces dropped bombs on his people for attempting to divide Nigeria as against his "Nigeria's unity is non-negotiable" mantra.. Very heartless people.

The truth is, an average Igbo man wish to dominate everyone if given a little chance. One of them boasted in the 50s that they will rule Nigeria for the next 100 years because of their numbers in the military, their leaders stood against peaceful cessation from Nigeria because they thought they will dominate other tribes forever.

It is really funny that the coup, unity government, and cessation was from the same set of people.
