I think it's their mode of praying. A kind of respect to God in their own way. There's something I've not really understood. I have 3 Arab friends, one is in dubai, hes a Palestinian-American and 2 Pakistanis. None of them has a black dot or mark on his forehead yet, they are fervent and hardly miss all the 5 prayer times daily. I'd ask them one day, how they've been praying without a spot on their foreheads.
