Lagos to get 50 Electric buses by 2024, marking a shift to cleaner transportation

In its drive to commit to cleaner transportation, Lagos state is set to get 50 electric buses by the first quarter of 2024.

This was revealed by Olukemi Amore, head of bus services at Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), at the 2023 Nordic Nigeria Connect on Tuesday.

“For the next phase of electric buses, we will see 50 electric buses come into Lagos,” she said.

She said it is one of Lagos state’s plans to transition to cleaner mobility and reduce emissions in line with Sustainable Development Goals 11, 13 and the Lagos State Government’s THEME’S Agenda.

Lagos State currently has two electric buses that have been in operation since May 2023.

Other initiatives taken towards cleaner mobility by LAMATA include partnerships with private operators to run CNG buses in Lagos (2 different bus types), Participation in the World Bank study on Electric Mobility in Nigeria, a feasibility study on renewable fuel (Biodiesel and Biogas) for Public Transportation (Funded by SWEDFUND) and the partnership with the private sector to pilot electric buses for public transport operations in Lagos.

She said the demand for trips in the Lagos megacity region by all modes (including walking) is 22 million per day.

Amore said in 2011, Nigeria had the fourth highest CO2 emission from fuel combustion in Africa, after South Africa, Egypt and Algeria, respectively and by 2016, the transport sector, with a 32 per cent share, was the most significant contributor to a nationwide Fossil CO2 emission from fuel combustion that year. Stating that over a quarter of those emissions come from Lagos alone.

She noted that the vision for LAMATA is to operate a multi-fueled public transport network, and one such way is through the Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) implementation.

“Execution of projects within the STM will result in an emission level less than eight million tonnes per annum, representing over 50 per cent reduction in emissions from the 2032 BAU level,” she said.

Also, on the same panel, Francis Lechat, head of West Africa SCANIA, a popular truck and bus manufacturer, mentioned that they will reintroduce used trucks to Nigeria again in 2024.

He said they had done this in the past. Still, he stopped because most of the models of the used trucks across Europe and North America use Euro 5 diesel engines, and diesel produced in Nigeria contains a lot of sulphur, which is Euro2&3, so introducing used trucks to the country will cause frequent damages to the trucks lousy PR to the company.

He noted that with the emergence of the Dangote refinery, which intends to produce Euro-5 diesel, “we are bringing back the Used Trucks, but the commencement is pertinent on the start of Dangote refinery,” Lechat said

This is an absolutely brilliant execution. The two buses for the pilot phase are currently feeding data for the implementation of the next phase of 50 electric buses and before the end of 2024, the buses will be further increased. Awesome!

This is truly a great opportunity for every investor to key into the value chain of this next level of public transportation.

Yes, brilliant as said by someone up there. But there is one unsettling fact. Our mainstay remains fossil deposits. What happens in the broader picture of the world shifting away to cleaner energy sources without diversification of our economy? Collapse? We need to be out thinking. Nigeria as currently run with pile of debts is not productive or sustainable. It's bound to reach a blind wall one way sooner unless God anoints less selfish and people friendly leaders in Nigeria.

A country that feeds on oil products is buying electric vehicles (It barely produces 12,522 MW of electricity).
I promise you, these electric cars will be the death of Nigeria's economy.

The non-oil-producing countries are looking for alternative energy so they can stop depending on oil which will have a massive impact on our economy.

Other oil-producing countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have seen this and are now diversifying their economy by building various tourist destinations and other sources of income, while Nigeria is swimming in a pool of foreign debt.

If you are wise, you will know that the import of electric vehicles in Nigeria is a f00lish move.

Good idea until it is implemented and maintained for posterity.

Any idea when Lagos will recruit teachers to achieve 50% enrolment of children in government schools, instead of the horrible less than 5% currently, despite over 24 years of Tinubu and his boys claiming to be progressive governors? Since Tinubu, Fashola, Ambode and Sanwo Olu are just raising IGR from the masses, receiving federal allocation and taking loans on their behalf without providing matching services, utilities, facilities and infrastructure maintenance, are they really progreThieves?

Ratio of public to private schools in Lagos State is one to 22 ― Commissioner

September 4, 2022

The Lagos State government has said the ratio of public to private schools at both primary and secondary school levels in the state is one to 22.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, gave the revelation in her remark at the 2022 edition of the Total School Support Seminar Exhibition (TOSSE) held at Oregun in Ikeja between Thursday and Friday.

How is it a foolish move to import electric cars.

Weather Nigeria like it or not, weather we import electric cars or not , the world wld still move away from petrol products to a cleaner energy source.

Nigeria, a country with massive amounts of untapped oil deposits, is copying other countries who have none, by importing electric vehicles from them, thereby rendering her own major source of income useless, while empowering these other countries

The federal government should have acquired this electric buses for all the 36 states of Nigeria in large numbers before removing the petroleum subsidy and put railway transportation in perfect shape.
Tell me what can 2 electric buses do for now, in Lagos state o, even the 50 buses they're proposing?
Well God will see us through, we no go die put! undecided
