NCC boss urges control of Internet content
By Our Reporter9 hours 20 minutes ago
Dr. Juwah

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Eugene Juwah, has advocated the control of content that appears on the internet.

Juwah spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is attending the 2011 Expo of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

``There has to be some measure of control on content in a volatile political situation where messages, anonymous messages, are coming through internet and exacerbating this volatile situation; it cannot be allowed.’’

Juwah, who spoke against the backdrop of recent events in North Africa
, said that regardless of who was in charge, it was necessary to have an authority in charge of the content of the internet.

``We must find a way to regulate it; whether it is left to the regulators to do or to government, or to the service providers to do – it has to be worked out, but there has to be control of content.’’

Juwah also spoke on the quality of the services which the GSM companies were rendering Nigerians, saying that only substantial investments could improve the situation.
He said that although the networks were investing in improvement, they were still being hampered by legal requirements, especially on issues bordering on the environment.

Internet Censorship In Nigeria - Nairaland Is Endangered
Re: Nigeria Should Censor The Internet To Prevent Revolutions - Eugene Juwah, NCC by Beaf: 8:59pm On Oct 27, 2011
A very dangerous, evil and strange proposal indeed.

There is a lot of odious policking on the internet that is very worrying, but absolutely no need for sensorship.
Individuals in high positions need to be careful about the suggestions they make.

Perhaps Nigeria needs to enforce civil laws on the Internet as is done in the developed World, but we must go no farther.

Nigeria that has yet to employ civil law in the country, should now employ it on the internet?

Failed proposal.

The man who can not control GSM tariff in Nigeria is agitating for control of world internet space. Na wa o! shocked shocked He should be told that tariff is at  cut-throat level in Nigeria despite poor services from service providers and should come home and solve his problem before going to the world stage.

The corrupt KGB-style government led by Emperor Retardeen is afraid of Up-rising shocked.
It's too late for the moroon, the most useless President to ever set his foot on the face of the earth.

The revolutionalist are busy cordinating via social media on how to bring down the most useless government of this stupor drinking, black-hat, clownish ediot partying all night long.

when others are brain storming on ways to solve problem facing their countries, our fisherman is busy cutting cake of that bleeching-arshie looking wife.

More like, try stopping the bullet with a sieve.

it's necessary but impossible.

virtually no country has had any success in controlling the internet.

china is trying to but still.

we've all seen what happened to libya despite tight internet control.

True. IMHO, every country should ensure that its terrestial laws fully apply on the Internet. In the Western World, evidence from the sites a person visited and things they said while browsing are routinely used to obtain convictions. In fact several convictions are based entirely on evidence gathered from the Internet, however content is never censored and speech is free.
All sorts of convictions have been obtained from bullying to fraud and paedophelia; we too need to step up our laws.

this man does not strike me as a particularly intelligent fellow.
Where does he think he is?China?
censorship will take away the voice of the people and will quicken a revolt in the polity.
next thing he will asking NASS for another 6 billion to implement Internet filter and control.
The same way he asked for and got billions to register SIMs even after operators were doing exact same thing at no charge to the country.

Monkey see, Monkey do.

The "west" are talking of controlling internet content. Nigerian officials have joined the bandwagon. When will they develop their own mind and do things the independent way, instead of copy-copy ?

Re: Nigeria Should Censor The Internet To Prevent Revolutions - Eugene Juwah, NCC by Frendys(m): 9:54am On Oct 28, 2011
Even a fool that keeps his mouth shut is considered wise.

His proposal has no basis at all. How can you control something over which you do not have input. As long as we depend on others for their technological breakthroughs we would remain but a consumer. When you deprive people of freedom of speech in a corrupt society like us you are inviting anarchy.

We are truely black not because of the colour of our skin but because we do not mind our business. How is NITEL faring today against the recent entrants into the telecomuncation sector? They are declaring profits in Billions while our own is incurring debts in Billions.

Even the current Speaker of the Senate who was the Communcation Minister at a time said "mobile phone is not for common man" has abadoned the 0-9-0 for good. 0-9-0 was a legacy of NITEL! and was only made available to the rich yet it became moribound. angry

Now you see the irony of placing someone in authority who has no morality or expertise to control others much less its own lame organization.

He should just attend the conference and claim his ectacode instead of advocating the unacceptable. Until we become a real player we have no say whatsoever!

in a failed state like nigeria, the actions of the government can only further precipitate the inevitable and harden the resolve of the progressives/liberalists. the anti-progress machinery is what's in force. its alredy begun and they know it. control the internet - dem no born you well.
Re: Nigeria Should Censor The Internet To Prevent Revolutions - Eugene Juwah, NCC by Nobody: 11:48am On Oct 28, 2011
Is it the cowardly internet noisemakers in Nigeria (the sort that abound here on NL) that would start or partake in a revolution? *Scoffs*. If there'll ever be a revolution in Nigeria, the Internet would have NOTHING to do with it because most of the poor and angry masses that would drive such a revolution have no access to the Internet. Let's quit acting like wannabes, and deluding ourselves. Internet kor, intranet ni.

A mediocre government official who does not contribute anything to the technological growth of the internet, but is busy consuming what smarter nations are churning out, is ONLY concerned about censorship.

Bloody end user.

that shows that their is a lot they are trying to hid, and i would quickly lead to the revolution they are running from the only reason the revolution hasnt started is because we have not seen a credit leader that does not have an ulterior motive he he stands as the leader of the revolutionary group they want to continue to improvish the rest of us nigerians
