President Lazarus Chakwera announced austerity measures aimed at healing the economy.

Malawi is battling an economic crisis that has led to fuel shortages, inflated food prices, and a shortage of foreign exchange. Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has suspended all foreign trips by government officials, including himself.

The move, announced in a nationally televised address on Wednesday night, was part of what he called tough measures to heal the nation’s economy.

He also directed all ministers who are currently outside the country to return home and said the suspension will be in place until March next year.

“Any travel deemed absolutely necessary by anyone during that period must be submitted to my office for my personal authorisation,” Chakwera said.

The president unveiled a range of austerity measures, including cutting by 50 percent fuel entitlements for cabinet ministers and senior government officials. He would lead by example by curtailing his travel plans, including cancelling his attendance at the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai later this month.

As part of the measures, he also directed the minister of finance to include provisions for a reasonable wage increase for all civil servants in the midyear budget review.

And he ordered a lowering of income tax on individuals, so that workers whose incomes have lost value are helped with a “lower tax burden”.

This country is in the same shoes as Nigeria; weakening currency, waning economy and a crushing debt burden.

Malawi's government have risen up to the reality of their crushing debt profile and waning economy by cutting costs, as any country under such conditions would. Their external debt is about 80% of their nation's GDP. Although their population is around 20 million, the government have put in place, drastic actions to cut losses, look inwards and stabilize the economy.

In comparison, Nigeria's exteral debt is edging towards 70% of our GDP, having being on a meteoric rise in the past few years. With a population over 10 times what Malawi will have to deal with, there are no strict measures in place yet to curtail wasteful ventures as the last budget unveiled by the government contained a lot of frivolous items, not in tune with today's realities.

No, the country is not in same shoes with Nigeria. They're ahead of Nigeria.

At least, their president is taking measures to curtail the economic crisis by suspending all foreign trips including himself.

Tinubu just came back from Saudi Arabia and he's also traveling to Germany tomorrow for a fruitless journey and he also bought expensive cars for useless NASS members. So much for a country battling economic crisis.

Can the headless mobs now move to Malawi?

With this policy, Malawi should be 10000000000 times better than Nigeria.

At least, Malawi is an African country and there won't be stress porting to that country.

I think that will be better, rather than wailing uncontrollably about Tinubu.

Very funny pipu.

borrowed the idea from Obi
one thing I was certain is that things will never be this worse under Obi
the major problem of Nigeria is that cost of running government.
imagine spending limited dollars on enjoyment like Seyi.
cut cost of running government by 70% and watch this country improve in every aspects because the benefits includes.
1. discouraging corrupt politicians from running for office thereby giving technocrat opportunities.
2. save money and invest in production instead of consumptions.
etc.
the major problem of this country is cost of running government.
an average moneybag politician sees politics as an investment where he invest money and cash out real big instead of serving the public.
imagine channeling every money I mean every dime to the proper channels.
Nigeria knows what to do to be better but I guess if they'll take that step.
as far as Nigeria politicians continues to see politics as investment, nothing will ever change.

The best way to lead is by example.Cant our leader borrow a leaf from this gentleman. The show of empathy will further endear him more to the citizens of the country.
